McKfn ley's tnrifT committee in congress ba9 ict a part certain days in which to hear certain "special interests" discussed before it drafts its tariff bill, One day is set a part on which the committee will hear the iron interests, one ' wool, one woolen goods, one jute flax and hemp, and so on, If this were not so serious a matter, affecting the intetests of sixty millions of people, it would be grotesquely humorons, , One iron manufacturer w ill undertake to tell the committee just how much duty should be placed upon imported manufactured iron, while the other sixty millions of people of the coun try who are also interested in this subject are practically excluded from the presence of the CDinmi tee. The man who producesjraw ma terial and the manufacturer of iron can both he heard, but how a tout the great class of farmers and other consumers of iron goods? Will they be there? Will they be heard? In this land of ours, it was ence thought that the true policy of a free government was the great est good for the greatest number, but this pro- .ction scheme reverses this great underlying principle of free government and lays down the policy of the greatest good for the least number and at the expense of tbe greater, Yes, this committee have set a part a day to hear iiiggestions on the jute question. Who will be there to advise with the committee to the tax duty on jute? Will it be the dozen men in the United States who manufactui jute cloth, or the thousands and millions of farmers who use it? The policy of the greatest good to the least number will secure the at tendance of the dozen manufacturers, while the farmers will be absent, Why should tliere be a"y qtiestion about removing the entire duty fiom raw jute and jute sacks? Iso jute i raised in this country. Then why protect a dozen manufacturers by teying a heavy tax upon every farmer who used jute sacks? The wool growers will be heard long and loud and menacingly before tht coinmitiee. but th,e poor man who labors hard with his shovel to day to pay for the woolen shirt he bought last week will never be heard of before that committee. The few hundred thousand men who raise wool will be fully represented before the com mittee, will be attentively listened to, and tenderly looked after, by McKinley, but the millions of poor cusses who consume woolen goods are as practically shut out from the presence of the committee ns if thy had no ex istence. The great majority are al solutely ignored while the favored few w ill be royally treated by McKinley because they arc prctec" tionists. The whole thing is the veriest mock cry and an insult to the intelligence of eveiy consumer in the country. Hut light is break ing, and the tim; is not far distant when these plutocrats who thus ignore the rights of the masses for the benefit of tbe classes, will hide themselves in shame from the scorns of an outraged people. Uivcn Away. For the benefit ol our custnmcr we will give aw ay on Jan 1st, the following : 1 Dinner set, 120 pieces, $25 1 Tea set, 44 pieces, $7.50. 3 Tea 6cts, each 44 pieces, $18.
