A. man In Indiana ! whom there are several like him In Linn county went out hunting, and while he was thus engaged there was a big rain and he sought shelter In a hollow log. The log became soaked with water, and welled until the aperture was too small for the man to get out again. There he was in a dilcinmu. lie quickly reviewed his past life, and when he came to think that he was not a subscriber for his own home paper, he felt so small that he 'craw led out of the hole without any trouble whatever. .. .16 . 6.1KI M geoond-oiass umu inmuir. 1)0 A L HKCOltD. i k.iuiiborly Nonce. We always to know what others arc saying aooui Here are some remarks by the editor Roseburg Plntndcaltr, alter return i.nms from the l'ress Association: "as train fur Yaquina was not due till i p. there was ample time to look about and w the numerous improvements concern' I which the Albany papers have so ich to say. The new woolen mill is a looking building of stone and brick id will soon be ready for the machine)- is a credit to Albany and wll! doubtles love a great factor in the building up of iat city. The street cars, Albany's latest ihlevement, will no doubt cuusc Albany nut on a great many metropolitan airs. tad they are sure to be well patronized, br a more villainous lot of sidewalks can- lot be found in Oregon outside of Rose kirir. Boot-blacks were few and far be . . ... .. .. t i . Sreen at least me ooumern uregon aeie ktlon couldn't find nny but vegetables Ind fruits of all kinds were in abundance. I delicious "milk shake was discovered ly Bro. Hell in one of the candy shops and If course he "set 'em up. Sort of Funny The following aflida rit, made before the County Clerk, is pub- shed in a leccnl issue of the Roseburg yicvitw, and is an easily solved conun- rum : uVe, JarresM Keaton and Fannie McGathan, residents of Pass Creek, iDouglas county, Oregon.belng duly sworn leach for himself and herself and not one Ifor the other, say that we are both un- Imarried and that the relation that we bear to each other is tiiat of a brother and sister-in-law. This affidavit is made for the bene fit of the public in general," lioLA Burglary. Last night a hold burglar entered the rooms of Mrs Marie Davis and tier sister, Mrs Richards up stairs In Strahn's Block and took fiom n trunk two valuable gold watches and chains, live gold rings, abuiit $; in money and various oiuer articles, nothing was known of the burglary by the inmates until this morning. $i Savkii. Now that we have no sa' oon, the parties who can not live without their beer, had better go to Albany. By going there, one could save $i,oo per day as a glass of beer costs but five cents there, wnile 11 tormerly cost to cents nere, ana a man who cannot drink twenty glasses per dav is no as ctcl as an ordinary rat hole. Brownsville Times. A Finger Cut Off. Last Saturday the little son of Mr Moycr and another boy were running a lawn mower at M Mover's home, at Third and Callpoola Street, when the Moycr boy got one of his hands in the knife of the mower, and just then his companion pulled the mower for ward, cutting off the little finger on one of his hands at the second joint. Carpenters Needed. As an evi dencc of the superior workmanship of M J II Campbell as a carpenter as well as popular contractor, it is only necessary to call attention to the fact that he has eight welling houses now under contract. Klr6t class carpenters can get employ mtnt by calling upon Mr campueii once. Our Schools. This season there will be five schools in Albany, the Central school with seven teachers, the Colleg with five teachers, the Catholic withtao or three, ar.d two Kindergartens, Miss Wheeler's with one assistant, and Mrs Waite Mead's,eighteen teachers in all. The vtual attendance will be about six hundred. Too Polite.
