THE UAM.Es JADE WINCES. The Democrat's lance-thrust penetrat. ed a tender spot In Harvey Scott's mental organitm. This man with a reptilian tongue and a heart filled only with male volent bitterness, after having basely sland ered over half of the sixty five millions of his countrymen and being righteously and justly denounced by the Democrat for his ci line, like a kicked cur.puts on a meek look ot humility and prates about belrf Subjected to much vituperation by demc Cratc papers. Does the ex-collector of customs suppose that he can slander and Tillify half the people of the country with at being called to account for it ? No sir, Republicans as well as democrats are con demning this brutal assault. Scott says the editor of the Democrat gets his poll tics innocently. Of course he does. That Scott gets his politics innocently admits of grave doubts on every hand. His bitter warfare on the whisky element some years ago, followed by a very sudden somersault to its dcfenfc.caused people to think that the change, instead of being an innocent one, was a very costly one. His abrupt change from his free trade views to a monopolistic tariff was never regarded as an innocent one. That Terry was a democrat, we do not deny. That he was a bad, dangerous element in society, no one will dispute. Every one knows that the democratic party has bad, dangerous men in !t,and that the republican party has bad, dangerous men in It. That the democratic party has such men in it, needs no further proof than the fact that Terry was a dem ocrat. That the republican party has its bad men, dirty slanderers, foul-mouthed detainers and villifiers of decent people, needs no further proof than the one cold fact that Scott is a republican. But can any democrat be found who is so mean and despicable as to charge that Scott, with all his misdeeds, faults, defects in charact er, is a representative of the methods, in tentions and purposes of the republican ,arty ? We opine not. Has Scott forgot ten the corruption and briberies practiced by his political party in Portland in 187 ? How he trembled as an aspen leaf when he contemplated the threatened prosecu tion of these bribers by Gibbs, U S district attorney, before Deady ? How in trepida tion of spirit and fear of an impending crisis, he wrote the following letter to Mitchell to induce that gentleman to help scare Deady off the bench in order that these bribers might not be prosecuted : Portland, Feb. 16th, 1874. My Dkar Sir i You will see that I have been and still am making It warm for Deady. I believe that if you and-other friends of our cause at Washington would acquaint Butler, and other members of the house with these tremendous facts, Deady would be impeached. You know that the Oregonian is constantly attacking Butler : and you know also that Deady is editor f the Oregonian. Now if all these facts were properly made use of wecould scare Deady, at least. What do you think about it ? All our friends here hope that something will be done to rid the bench of this "fleshliest Incubus." Please show this to Mr Holla day. Respectfully, II. W. Scott. Scott was then editor of the Bulletin and W Lair Hill of the Oregenian. The latter paper did what It could to prosecute the bribers, while the former threw everything In the way of those who were prosecuting. And this letter writer is the man who now sets himself up as a censor of the conduct of decent people. A more fearful lie was never breathed by human lips than when Pcott said that a murderer, a bully,a duel list, "an exceedingly Infamous man," was, throughout his career, an embodiment of the character of the democratic party of our day. To say this of Jefferson, Randolph, Madison, Pinckncy, Monroe, Jackson,Cal houn, Cass, VanBuren, Pierce, Buchanan, Douglas, Breckinridge, Tllden, Seymour, McClellaii, Hancock, Cleveland, Bayard nd hosts of other able, honest, patriotic citizens whose characteristics cover more than seven-eights of the pages of legisla tion by the national government, Isto write down the author of such saying as one of the dirtiest dispensers ol slan ders In the country. This ghoul In human garb has never been known to let any piomincnt democrat escape the nasty virus of his fangs, and at last with overpowe ring bit terness and party prejudice and party hate he seeks to accomplish at one fell stroke what he has long tried to do by piece-meal. But the great name of the democratic par ty is Invulnerable against his pigmy at-tack. "DKVOCsUTlO BLUSTER." When the governor of Mississippi said he would prosecute Sullivan and Kilrain for prise fighting, the Statesman and Ore goniait, following the example of the lead ing eastern republican papers, made sport of Ills threat by calling; it "democratic bluster" and other choice terms taken from their peculiar vocabulary of billingsgate. The governor meant, however, that the crime should be duly punished. John L. has been tried, found guilty and given 12 months in the penitentiary. This "demo cratic bluster" proves a terrifying reality to John L. and a veritable boomerang to I the Statesman, Oregonian and other or- I gans. These papers would sell the political ( capital they made for a song to be sung next summer. I It is now said a special session of congres; will be called to meet in November. 1 Abbey's Addition-. 54 lots in this ad- 1 dition to Albany, near Hackleman's 3rd ( audition, tor sale, at 50 to $125 a lot, at Curran A; Monteith's.
