Thursday said : "What Terry, (Judge Terry who was thot down the other day by a United States Marshal,) has been, well represents the character and history of the democratic party of the I'nited States." On Friday It aid : "Judge Terry .throughout Ills career, has been an expression and embodiment of the character of the democratic party of our day. No man has more fully repre sented Its intentions, methods and purpos es." As if to make this foul and dirty slander complete, and thus satiate his greed for the defamation of the good name of thirty-five millions of as honest and law abiding citizens as our country can boast of, Harvey Scott proceeds to tell what Terry '-has been." It describes him as'-an able but exceedingly infamous man," ns having fought a duel as the outcome of a conspiracy to murder his antagonist and not to satisfy his wounded honor,as a man who came into "new and disgraceful no toriety by marrying Sarah Althca Hill.the mistress of the late Senator Sharon," ns being "imprisoned for contempt of court,' as being -'a notable type of a class of in tellectual desperadoes," "a corrupt shield er of the murderers, gamblers, and ballot box stuffers,wh06e murder of editor James King in Vav, 1856, sounded the tocsin that tolled the general alarm for the or ganization of the vigilance committee,"etc. He was further described as being a man who, "after the war.returned to San Fran Cisco where he has steadily .added to the load of his increasing Infamy," as one who a'alway spurned law when it gored his ox, who always enforced law when it gored his neighbor's heid,"as one who "brought his haughty, passionate, tyrannical temper with him to California, and in his old age it has brought him down finally to the blcody grave that usually lies at tne end of life's lane for those who know no right but brutal might, who know no higher philosophy of justice and equity than to make every honest but helpless man's dif ficulty the tyrant's opportunity ,"and much more of the same sort. Scott, after draw ing this picture of continuous criminal life, says this life of Terry"well represents the character and history of the democratic party of the United States,' and thaf'Judge Terry throughout his careerhas been an expression and embodiment of the char acter of the democratic party of our day. Lan guage fails to express the meanness and utter depravity of the man who would - thus voluntarily slander and defame the ' chaiacter of over half the people of his own country. But this unspeakale heart ' lessness of Scott is not new. More than once like a ravenous ghoul and jackal has this same Harvey Scott gone to the grave of some great patriotic democrat as Tilden Hendricks, Seymour, McClellan,and, with brutal claws, exposed their remains to the world again. Dug their bones from their last resting place and, with appropriate animal glee, chuckled as he threw clods at them to make them give out music to charm his brutality. Such Is this man Harvey Scott, who knows no decency, is devoid of truth, honor, self-respect and all such qualities as characterize a true man. kseoine ud the onerous wir taxes on the necessary comforts of the poor. Sometime since the Democrat made the statement that facts were rapidly com ing to light that show that the republicans have a scheme on foot to repeal the tax on whir.kv and tobacco and continue the war taxes on the necessaries of life that con tribute to the happiness and comfort of the poor people of the country. This scheme seems to meet the approbation of the Afounaixetr, and it makes a feeble de fense of it by saylnB- that "the income and internal revenue taxes were the wartarlffel and the people have a right to ask that these be decreased as rapidly as possible.' Now these were not tariffs at all.but there were war tariff taxes levied upon the peo ple by way of high tariff duties upon all imported articles that constitute the neces saries of life. It is these high war tariff taxes that so largely affect the poor that the people have a right to see decreased and not the taxes on whisky and tobacco as these articles are not necessaries of life for rich or poor but mere luxuries, whose use could be beneficially dispensed with. It is evident that the idea of free whisky and free tobacco alarms the Mnnlaintrr for it seeks to break the foice of the Dent oca at'm statement by saving 1 "If at the next session of congress.every cent of revenue is taken off tobacco and liquor, it will not cheapen the price of these articles to the consumer, as soon as the government abolishes this tax the dif ferent state legislatures will Impose a greater one in the shape of license, and the money derived thsrefrom will go into the treasuries of the states Instead of that of the United States." And, pray, how docs our cotcmporary know that the dates would impose a great er tax in else the general government shou'd remove it ? Talk about sophistry.
