The Cali fornia overland passcniicr train was about an hour late this morning, says the Salem Journal, and when at the Fair grounds crossing they ran into the one horse wagon of an old gentleman, James Tucker, who was coining to Salem from his home near S'lverton, to market a few boxes of plum and pears. At the crossing the engine struck the horse and light wagon and knocked them forty yards, when they alighted on either side of the track, fifty feet apart. The contents of the wagon were scattered from the crossing to where the wagon was deposited, in a demolished condition, while there was not a string of harness left attached to the horse, which was killed ou'right. Mr Tucker, who was driving, was indeed fortunate, escaping with nothing more than flesh woundsaboui the head and face. He considers it a close call to getting hurt a little, but fortunately was uninjured. Tramps Here is the way they go for tramps at Walla Walla according to l'endleton paper : "The citizens made another riid on the tramps at that place last night Four parties of twenty-live men each scoured the suburbs, armed with clubs, and beat the tramps from their quar. ters In barn-yards and fence corners. They report forest fires beyond Gatesville in Marion county, covering considerable territory. Call early and get choice of patterns. . Orange Morgan Dead. Mr. Orange Morgan, who was dngged by a horse at Paisley, as narrated by the Democrat, died on Sunday, Aug. 4th. It seems that he had a lariat around the horse's neck and was going towards it,whcn his feet got caught in the lariat and the horse 1 dragging him for a long distance, bruising and breaking his bones in a frightful man ner, lie was about 35 years 01 age and was a man of exemplary rharacter. He leaves a wife and children. Mr. Morgan had accumulated a property valued at $30. 000 or $40,000, in the stock business. Aug. 6.h 1 88m, nt Knox Butte, afler an Illness of about a year, Mrs. J. M. Archibald.aged 48 years. Mrs. Archibald was a pioneer of iSjj, and was one of the noble women of Linn county. She was a sister of Clav, Ans and Arthur Marshall, and the mother of Orris Archibald, Secretary of the Al bany Farmers Co. The deceased leaves a husbsnd and ten children, four bovs and six girls, and many friends to mourn the death of a good wife and mother and gen erous neighbor.
