As the best and only argument which the Mtuntaintrr could bringto rebut the Cimockat's showing up of that paper's Illogical and untenable position on the sub ject of "protection," It says : 'Every evil that has befallen the United States since the government began its existence it, (the Democrat,) lays to the charge of protec tion." The Oregcnian, rushing to the aid o: its retreating p-ctege,says, substantially, tha. the Democrat charges all industrial evils a-d economic disturbances to the tariff policy of the country. Now. these charges against the Democrat are so uttcrlv groundless and without color of truth to maintain them, that no words with less force than willful misrepresentation and pure fabrication would properly char acterize them, and we pen these hard words in pity, not in anger. The Democrat quite frequently refers to the industrial erils and economic disturbances which come upon the country under republican rule, not for the purpose of showing that the tariff policy ot the country- necessarily brings those evils upon us, but for the pur pose of showing that the boasted protection policy of the country cannot prevent their coming. As an example : It is a misfor tune to the industrial interests of the coun- try that strikes against a reduction of -wages in large manufacturing establish ments like Carnegle'a should take plice similar to the one now going on, whereby thousands of poor men with large families dependent upon them for bread and butler. should take place. We refer to this strike not as the result of the tariff policy of the country, but to show laboring men and misguided farmers that these strikes will occur in spile of this boasted "protection" policy of the country. In truth and in fact the most stupendous and far-reaching strilM that have ever occurred in the country have taken place under the high est rates of tariff that the country has ever had. During the late camraign 'republi can leaders promised the people that if they would elect Harrison.good wages and constant employment should fall to the lot of workingmen.good home markets to our producers, ample, efficient mail service to the cour.trv. etc. They warned voters that if Cleveland should be elected the re verse nf all these would be entailed upon the neoile. The Democrat refers to the reduction in wages that has taken place aince the election, not a a necessary re sult of protection but to show up the un fulfilled promises and predictions of these republican leaders. The Meuntminttr says the Democrat is wedded to free trade. The readers of the Democrat know this to be untrue, and will naturally and logically come to the conclusion that the Mountain rmutt be driven to the wall and left without argument when competled t re sort to such silly misrepresentation. The Democrat has had in times past some reason to expect a more candid course from the Mountivnrrr. The most charitable view, however.tatakeof this foolish charge that the Dk.wocrat Is wedded to free trade is that the HLomntuinttr really docs not un derstand what free trade means- The Democrat has many reasons to believe It does not. An Eastern firm en gaged in manufacturing office furniture has opened warerooms in I.ondmi.and the cabinet makers of the English metropolis are in a flutter of surprise and apprehen sion because their new American compe titor can offer a handsomer desk at a lower price than they can think of turning out a similar article for. A London paper.with strong protection leaning.cahs attention to the new erterprise, and begs the free traders to consider how utterU out of gear is their argument.that protection increases the cost of production to such an extent as to forbid the manufacturers of a protective country from competing with those of a free trade land Moitnlainnr. If an American article can he sold in London cheaper than a similar article manufactured there can, then why keep up the cry that removing the duty from that article would tuin our manufacturer.
