ventor of a shuttle point, which the state
uses in all its jute loams. He intends to
claim a royalty ,but the authorities contend
that all a convict's labor belongs to the
state.

There is no danger that Andrew Jackson
-will be forgotten. There will always be
more than one page of American history
that will be devoted to him, and the Im
press of his strong individuality will be felt
by the people nf this country for many
generations to come. He is one of the few
men America has produced who do not
need a monument. Nevertheless, as the
present is pre-eminently a monument
building period in American history, it is
gratifying to know that a movement has
been set en foot to beautify and perman
ently care for the grounds about his grave
within the shadows of his old hamc. The
women of Tennessee have started Ihi
creditable work, and propose to make of
the Hermitage grounds a beautiful, quiet
park, a place for the pilgrimage and rest of
patriots, to restore the old home as far as
possible to the condition in wl.'cli it v. as
when the tread of the old soldier's feet was
heard in its halls and to make of his tomb
a proper mausoleum to hold his honored
dust The work i. being taken up in every
part of the country ,and it Is confidently ex
pectcd that the money required for the
purpose about $150,000 will be readily
forthcoming. It is stated that In New
York Mrs Cleveland Is acting as the agent
of the Lad!cs' Hermitage association. Other
prominent women have already identified
themselves with the movement.and its sue

It is reported of the celebrated English phy.
sici.in.Dr Field, that at a time wh:n diphtheria
was raging, a few years ago, he used nothing
but common flour of sulpher, a teaspoonful
mixed with the 6nger in a vine glassful of
water and given as a gargle,and in ten minutes
the patient was out of danger. He never lost
a case of this disease. Sulphur destroys the
fungus in man and b'ast. In extreme cases,
where a gargle could not be used, dry sulphur
was blown down the throat through a quill, and
sulphur burned in a shovel so that the patient
conld inhale it.
An effort is to be made in Iowa to strip the
law of its nonsense. Lawyers declare that
deeds warrants, and all other legal papers can
be cut down one-half in the amount of where
ases and wherefores.
