Daily Democrat FOOD VALUE OF APPLES. Fruit as an article of foed, and more es pecially applet, have been proved of great value. Some farmers save annually in I able bv earthly tribunal!. Canada will no longer be the refuge of bood leri and other criminals from the United States. The Weldom Extradition bill, which was passed at the last session of the Dominion Parliament provides for the arrest and return of persons guilty of almost any of the graver crimes punish- various ways quite a sum of money by the use of green and dried fruit upon their tables, not merely by the amount of ali ment afforded, but adding to the variety and to the list of luxuries enables them to reduce the amount of other and more costly articles. By planting rich and high flavored sorts for culinary purposes, instead of the of an inferior grade,a great saving may be made in sweetening and spices The amount of sugar and other ingredi ents used for making bad apples geod is often mere than enough to buy good ap. ples.sugar and all. Fall Pippins, for exam ple, at fifty certs per bushel, have been found more economical than poor and in sipid varieties at fifteen cents per bushel. By a free use of the best sweet apples through autumn and wlnter.for baking and for puddings, some families have avoided large expenditures. The aggi egate saving in the million of American families who might enjoy the privilege of plenty of ruit, with a general cultivation ( the bes' kinds for a succession the year through, might perhaps be set down.without extrav agance,as more than half the expenses of the general Government. Kot less important is the value of fruit as an article of food for domestic animals. Although direct and careful experiments by weighing and measuring are still want ing, enough ha been ascertained to prove that apples, especially the richer, sweet varieties, as food for cattle and swine, are fully equal to potatoes, and seme of the most careful trials already made indicate their decided superiority, being about as seven to five. The chemical analysis cf these two productions show the superiority of the apple in the aliment it con'ains, and also proye that some sorts excel others i richness and value. Hence the importance of ascertaining bv careful trial those sorts best adapted to feeding and fattening. For fattening swine, apples are particu larly excellent. Seme farmers have saved a large percentage of the expense of pork making by allow ing their hogs to run on a part of their orchards w hile the autumn The tomb of Virgil, just outside Naples, is forsaleat a moderate figure. If the owner wants to realize a handsome sum for it he ought to get Chicagoand St. I.ouis to bid for it. C. G. Burkhart, Clerb. June 21st, X8S9, . fruit was falling from the trees. A farmer, last year, sold forty dollars worth of pork fattened largely with the "droppings" of only half an acre of good grafted orchard The process was complete by a week cr two of feeding with grain. Even common seeding apples, if cooked, are valuable. In one experiment, 500 pounds of pork weie made from 1:0 bushels of .apples. I here is no doubt, however, that selected grafted varieties weuld have been found much superior. Even the hogs them selves are good judges, and show much discrimination in choosing the best trees whenever a plentiful supply is allowed them. For milch cons, sweet apples reg. ularly fed, after be'ng sliced to prevent cheking, have been found to increase the milk considerably in quantity. They are also good for horses, as well as for nearly all other domestic animals. As an article of comfort and luxury, the value of fruit can scarcely be estimated. The few who have learned by actual expe rience the enjoyment of the best and most delicious sorts for the whole twelve months would not willingly relinquish the privilege. Many, it is true, have furnished themselves with occasional supplies of their own rais ing ; they possess only a few scattered fragments of the yearly circle of fruits; but the number is yet too small, although rapidly increasing, w ho may place upon their tables delicious tort, on almost any day of the entire year. Another noted breeder of trotters is dead. General William T Withers.aged Cdied at Lexington, Ky., on Sunday morning.from the effects of a wound received while storming a fort during the Mexican war. He ow ned Happy Medium and other fine stallions, lie never raced his horses and never traded and was, lhercIore, one of the lew breeders in the land. He has realized nearly $1,000,000 In eighteen years from the product of his stud. Joseph Pulitzer, editor of the New Yoik Wtrld, has donated $15,000 to assist boys in the public schools of New York City in getting college education. Each boy sc. lected will receive $250, and twe'.ve boys will be thus assisted each year until sixty have entered college. This provides for the operation of the plan for live years. If it proves incery way satisfactory Mr Pulitzer may continue it longer. To May 18, 1SS5. 1'ie-iilent Cleveland had removed J.ooo republican officials. To May IS, 83, I'icsidcnl Harrison had re moved 9.500 democrats. Which party loves toe spoils, nearly live mure than the other ? CONTRACT TO BE LET.-Tbe church building committee at Feoria.
