Tne Democrat now mentions postmasters a' the following- places whem Cleveland permitted to serve their terms out.nainely: Albany, Astoria, liaker City, Corvallis, East Portland, Eugene City, Jacksonville, Oregon City, Pendleton, Portland, Salem and The Dalles. Now compare this fact with what the Oregcnini. said about Cleve land's "slaughtering nearly the whule line I of republican officials," and see what a re markably small grain of truth only can be extracted from its vcrv large bundle of misrepresentation. ;;The Oregonian would 3taye us explain w hy Cleveland removed the collectors of internal revenue. This is doiging the issue entirely. The Demo crat spoke of officials who were appointed for a term of four years, hence collectors Ol internal revenue are not included in that class of officials, as they are appointed to hold officeU the pleasure of a superior. It -would be just as pertinent (or the Demo CRAT to ask the Oregtuiua to be "kind enough" to explain why, under the "civil service" of Harriron, fourth class postnins tcrs all over the country arc being removed at the rate of scores per day. Could it tell why the very firs'; of this class to fall in Oregon w as an honorably discharged vet eran of the war, to make room for a local republican politician who is as ignorant of the smell of powder as the Origanum is of political consistency ? Hut tiie Dr.mocrat does not deem it necessary that the reason should be explained to any one, for all know that this administration wants these offices and that ere long they will have them, too. It would gladly take the presi dential postoffices with the same spirit of greed for the spoils were it not constrained by public opinion to follow the example et it by Cleveland. We might go on and mention thousands of republican officials w ho served their terms out under "Bourbon methods."
