Harrison will give anti-Mahone Virgin
ian republicans a hearing to-morrow. A
delegation of Virginia negroes called at
the White House Saturday. They say that
Harrison told them he did not propose to
recognize Mahone. But as one of this
delegation expressed it : "Its mighty queer
if Mahone isn't recognized by the appoint
ing power, that every man appointed to a
federal office in or from that state happens
to be a shouting Mahonite." While this
crowd is quarrelling over the spoils, dem
ocrats here are looking forward to carry
ing the state by much larger majority thin
Cleveland and Thurman did.
Verily the ways of providence are
scrutable. The fight between Blaine and
Harrison has been indefinitely postponed
on account of the news received from
Hayti. It seems that the fellow who was
eneas-ed in makine a treaty with France
that would endanger the Monroe doctrine
has been so badly licked by the rebel gen
eral that he is no longer in a position to
make treaties, hence we have no need for
a commission in that country, and Blaine
has no excuse for attempting to bull dor.e
Harrison into lettine him have his way.
The next news from Hayti may change
the face of '.he matter.
Secretary Windom has, in deference to
a wide expression of condemnation refused
to accept the opinion of the Solicitor of the
Treasury, that it would be unlawful for
the Catholic University of America.that is
to be established in this city, to bring from
Europe a corps of instructors. The matter
has been referred to the Attorney-Geneial
and if he decides the opinion of the Solic
itor to be good law the officers of the Uni
versity will go to Congress in order to gel
an amendment to such an absurd law.
Disappointment at not receiving ar. of
fice is having a bad effect on James Jack
son, of Alabama, who was a candidate for
the District Attorney-ship given to Par
sons, the -.-ng'neer of the "white man'i
party" fiasco. He is in such a bad way
that his family has been telegraphed to
come on, He is crazy.
Among the appointments by Hanison
List week were a democrat and a negro.
The negro was made receiver of public
moneys at Huntsville, Alabama, and the
democrat Marshal of the western district
of Louisiana,
Cranks seem to have the advantage of
ordinary people in the matter of "luck."
For instance, look at the eas; of Capt G A
Amies, USA retired, who has just had
his third sentence of dismissal from the
army commuted by the president to con
finement w ithin such limits as may be pre
6ented by the Secretary of War.and to de
privation of the right to wear the uniform
and insigina of his rank in the army for a
period of five years. The offenses for
which he was tried this time were intrud
ing Into the inaugural parade and attempt
ing to pull the nose of Gov Beaver,of Penn
sylvania. The court martial found him
guilty and sentenced him to dismissal.
Most people litre regard him as crazy
enough to be in an asylum.
Julius Ceasar Burrows, the Michigan
Congressman, whose principal distinction
the possession of a voice that is a pretty
good imitation of a fog-horn,and who hopes
to be Speaker of the next House of Repre
sentatives, is very much troubled for fear
that the wicked democrats will give the
republicans trouble when the time comes
to organize the House. It is a pretty
commentary on the rules governing that
body for Burrows to say that with the as
sistance of one experienced member he
could keep the House in a dead lock for
the two years of its existence.
P M G Wanamaker is anxious to stop
the handling of the mails on Sundays. The
business men of ttie country would be like
ly to vigorously protest against such a
move. The Western Union Telegraph
Company would probably pay Wanamaker
more than he paid for his position if he
could stop all mails on Sundays. It would
be worth at least one million dollars per
year to that concern.
There is a rumor here that Patrick
Eagan recently appointed Minister to
Chili, had been recalled on account of the
revelations in the murder case of Pr Cron
in at Chicago. The rumor is denied at die
state department.
lix-Senator Riddlcbeigcr is making him
self the laughing stock at Washington by
his antics. If lie is not sent to an inebri
ate asylum -0011 it will be too late.
Col J C Kelton has been appointed Ad
jutant General of the army, to succeed
General K C Drum, recently retired. He
has been General Drum's assistant for sev
eral years.
Two hours a day is the time given by
the members of Harrison's cabinet to see
ing the public. Quite exclusive these
gentlemen are growing.
The members of the local scientific asso
ciation were opening an Indian mound in
Southeast Missouri. The hired native who
was digging had already thrown out sev
eral pieces of carious pottery and a num
ber of weapons used in ancient Indian war
fare. Oppressed by the heat and the close
ness of his quarters he tossed up his empty
pocket flask for the purpose of having it
refilled. The St Louis Colonel in the par
ty looked at It in utter bewilderment.
"Heavens I" he exclaimed in a hoarse, awe
stricken whisper, "what a highly civilized
race of Injuns them mound builders was
Senator Washburn, of Minnesota, is now
engaged in denouncing the use of money i n
elections. Mr. Washburn has probably, re
pented; for it is known that not many months
ago he was chajged with buying his way to the
United State Senate, and it took the biggest
whitewash brush in Minnesota, wielded by a
Republican Legislature, to make him appear
at all decent.
Solon Chase, the great Maine Greenbacker
and proprietor of "th:m steers," was recently
asked by a friend w hy he had not done a cer
tain thing. "Ive been thinkin' of it." said
Mr. Chase, "but, you see, I've been tnjoyin'
religion too well; and when a man's enjoyin'
religion so well ht'i apt to forgit to do hit
duty."

election resulted in the choice of forty. two
Democrats and fifty Republicans. Now the
Democrats have secured forty-nine Superinten
dents, the Republican forty-tun and the Inde
pendents one, a net gain of nine for the Demo
crats anil a Republican loss vf ten.
