Daily Democrat COMPACT BETWEEN TIll'KMAN AND CAM ON. Barring Ohi, Pennsylvania is probably the most clamorou community for federal patronage of any state In the Union. For fifty years or more It has been fortunate in having men of great influence as its repre sentatives in Congress, men, too, who saw to it that the Keystone state had a very large share of federal "pap." Both Simon Cameron anJ his son, who succeeded him, believe firmly in the doctrine, "to the vic tors belong the spoils." Therefore, they have had the car of every President for nearly half a century, and easily secured places for those who were friendly to their interests. This is one of the sources of Gen. Cameron's remarkable power upon the political end of Pennsylvania. Ex-Senator Thurman one day at a din ner party illustrated the office getting pro pensity of the old General in a very neat way. Tlie elder Cameron and Mr Thur man are personally warm fricnds,and, while the company at the table were at the bight of the enjoyment of the occasion, the two got to dialling each other about their as sociations in the Senate. "General," said Mr Thurman, "if you should reach the golden shore before I do 1 hope you will say a good word for me." "Certainly I will," replied the General, "I should be lonesome on the other side without an occasional tiff with you ; but Thurman. suppose you get there first, what are you going to do for me r" "Oh, I will 6peak well of you," was Thurman's quick reply, "but I will at the tame time warn St Peter that if he doesn t keep his eye on you every officer in Ga briel's army will be a Pennsylvanian before vou have been there a month." There are seventy men, all American citizens whose fortunes aggregate the big total of $!, 413,000,000, This exceeds by 131,000,000 the total money circulation of the United States on the first day of the present month, accord ing to the Treasury statement. One southern iron company sold 65. 56 1 tons of iron in the state of Ohio within a year past, and 6777 tons in Pennsylvania. These transi tions locate the pinch in the shoe ol the iron business with absolute precision. United StatesConsul Mason of Marseilles writes to the state department that the effects of general and unrestained absinthe drinking in K ranee are now recognized as forming a basis of one of the gravest dangers which threatened the physical and moral welfare of the Kreuch people. Farmers and fruitgrowers who use Paris green or London purple for protecting po tato crops or their apple orchards can hardly be too careful. Familiarity with this danger has induced some to disregard the carefulness which while the use of the ' poison was new was generally observed. It is always best to use these poisons in watei',and a much weaker solution than is often supposed will destroy insects. The codling moth especially is killed by a so lution so weak that there is no danger of its ever remaining on the fruit until it is gath ered for eating. But sheep and pigs should be kept out of apple orchards after they have been sprayed until a heavy rain has fallen to wash the poison from the grass under the trees. A light rain will not do this, as every one can see by the dryness of the soil under any dense foliage. Only after the leaves have been thoroughly sat urated with water will they drip upon the grass or soil below. In case poisoning w ith Paris green or London purple occurs, it should be remembered that iron rust is the best antidote. Most soils contain iron, so that after the poison touches them it is harmless. A German statistician says : "There are at present 3,064 languages spoken by the inhabitants of our globe.whose religious ' convictions are divided between 1,000 dif ferent confessions of fath. The number of males is nearly equal to that of females. The average duration ef life is thirty-three years. One fourth of the population of the earth dies before attaining the seven tcenthyear. Of i,oeo persons only one reaches the age of 100 years, and not more than six that of sixty-five years. The en tire population of the globe is upward of i,2oo.ooo,ooo,of whom S...ooodie every year ; 96,840 every day ; 4,820 every hour; 67 every minute, and one aid a fraction every second. Married people live longer than the unmarried, the temperate and in dustrious longer than Ihcgluttons and idle, and civilied longer than the unch ilized. Tall persons enjoy a greater longevity than small ones. Women have a more favora ble chance of life before reaching their fiftieth year than men, but a less favorable one after that period. The proportion of married persons to single ones is as 75 to 100. Persons born in spring have a more robust constitution than those born at other seasons. Births and deaths occur more frequently at night than in the day time. The failure of the Almy (woolen) Manu facturing Company of Philadelphia is credited to the continued high tariff on wool. The other day a glass factory of fifty years' standing was closed in Massa chusetts because it had to go to Pennsyl vania for its coal instead f getting it laid down at much less cot from Nova Scotia. Similarly almost the last of the New Eng land iron works has been protected out of existence. Even in Pennsylvania Mr Car negie's firm announced a scaling to the extent of 20 per cent in the wages of his workmen. Events of this description hav ing reference to the tariff arc occurring with much frequency jut at present, and thev are so instructive that it is a pity that we do r.ot have a general election this year. To morrow the voters of Pennsylvania will determine whether they will have a prohibitory clause In'their state constitu tion or not. From the tone of the eastern press we should say the majority against the amendment will range from 50,000 to 1 25.COO. Dr. M. H.
