ure to the air, by the oxygen in the air,
which unites with, or oxidizes the alcohol,
changing it int acetic acid, of w hich vin
egar is only a weak solution. Pickles are
colored green by boiling in a copper ket
tle, because the vinegar unites with the
copper, forming a green colored salt, sim
ilar to verdigris. As this coloring matter
is unwholesome and poisonous, '.he practice
is not one to be recommended.

Prof Richards, of Yale College.has made
a study of the records of 2,4:5 students, in
order to determine, if possible, the rela
tions of athletics in Yale to scholarship.
The general result is that the athletes fall
slightly behind the non-athletes In schol
arship, but not so much as to demand a
suppression of such exercises. In some
branches of athletic exercises the students
who engage in the sports are above the
average of the non-athletes In scholarship.

HOW TiTMAKK A CIMILCEMAlt.
A great mistake is sometimes made in
ventilating cellars and milk houses. The
object of ventilation is to keep the cellars
cool and dry, but this object often fails ol
being accomplished bra common mistake
and instead the cellar is made both wet and
damp. A cool place should never be ven
tilatcd unless the air cdmittcd is cooler
than thnt within, or at lest us cool as that
or a very little warmer. The warmer the
air the more moisture it holds In suspen
slon. Necessarily, the cooler the uir the
more the moisture Is condensed and preci
pitated. When a cool cellar is aired on a
warm day,thc entering air being In motion
appears cool, but as It tills the cellar the
cooler air with which it becomes mixed
chills it, the moisture Is condensed and dew
is deposited on the cold walls, and i.iiy
often be seen running down them in
streams. Then thecellarisdampand soon
become moldy. To as old this the w in
dows should only be opened at night, anj
late the last thing before retiring. The
wlnJows should be closed before sunrlsr
in the morning and kept closed and shaded
during the day. If a cellar has a damp
smell and cannot be thoroughly ventilated
a few trays of charcoal set around on the
floor, shelves and ledges will make the air
pure and sweet.
