Ax Eloquent Max Eighty-five of Albany's literary people listened to Col. Copcland last evening deliver Ills masterly lecture on "What's to Hinder." One thing that does it is the attempt so many people make to bore auger holes with gimlets. The lecture is one full of electric pictures, laughable incidents, pathetic facts, truth ful sayings, piercing remarks. It is alive frent the beginning, and the person who hears it gets as substantial a benefit as he does when he eats meat and potatoes. You laugh at a witicism, in the theater you simply laugh at a ludicrous position or re mark. When you go home after hearing Copeland your head is full of points and good resolutions. He is the best orator ever in Albany, and If you want to spend an evening in real enjoyment go to-night and hear him on the "Future of the Re public." Though it sounds dry there will not be a dry remark in it, and you will not only laugh, but be obliged to do some thinking. Yesterday just as the Dkmockat was out r.evt came of a devastating fire at Seattle, and during the evening excited crowds gathered around the telegraph of fice watching for news of the contlagrationi made discouraging by continual reports of 'burning fiercer than ever," "whole town in ashes," "probably not a heuse will be left standing," etc. The result thews it to be the worst fire in the history of the coast. Forty five business hlecks were burned, not one left standing, and the total loss is new estimated at about fifteen million dol ars. Bricks and frames alike, urged on bv a strung sea bicese were twept down; the local lire department could do little and Portland and other towns went to the res cue. All the hotels, newspaper, telegraph ollices, etc., in the business pktt, were burned, and only Bell town business houses were left. Several former Albany people were sufferers, M I) Ballard, Drs Price and Tate, U Kline, Fred Eggert aad Wm Fab r, being aineng the number. The Albany insurance company had S20,- coo to $3o,x placed there ; but oa account I reinsurance and the fact that consider able was on residence property their loss win only amount to about $10,000. a mere trifle for such a large conflagration. The four local Seattle companies will probably collapse. The Northwest, of Portland, is a heavy loser, and other state companiet get a benefit. The following special to the Democrat received this afternoon gives the latest on the situation. Seattle, June 7, 3 p. m. The official loss by fire is estimjtcd at between fifteen and twenty million. A number of lives were surely losi and the city is still under military patrol During the night one man was shot and killed, name unknown. A negro was struck with an axe by a patrol while stea'ing and fatally injured. One hundred thirty arrests were made dur ing the night, two hundred citizens being sworn in as special patrolmen. At least two thousand people slept in the open air last nicht. The burnt district covers lrom 120 to 130 acres, about 65 blocks. The lire is still consuming the wharves. It has been unanimously decided bv citiens committee that no wooden buildings will he erected to replace those in the burnt district. Vortii Dic;estiN(1. An Ex. says : "It takes a minister two or three minutes to perforin the marriage ceremony. He is sometimes handed a $5 bill, sometimes a $10, and gets a good supper besides. The list of presents is sent to the editor and requires two or three hours hard work to put in type. He makes no charges for it, but he gets no $5 bill. Perhaps he gets some pieces of dry, broken cake and sells an etra copy of his paper for a nickel ; but just as possible the parties are not even subscribers and beg n copy of a neighbor to cut the list of presents from." The minister deserves all he gets, which only happens five to ten times a year ; hut the editor does not deserve always to get left with the crumbs. IIITINU I'OMMK.NTS. riuw to Get Even. Mr l. Samuels, of the West Shore, was in the city several days tills week collecting his $750 for the 5000 supplements of his monthly devoted to Corvallis and Benton county. There was almost universal dissatisfaction with the work. After a good deal of talking on both sides of the controversy , Mr Samuels succeeded In collecting most, if not all, the money. Dr Lee In paying his blil, ex pressed himself to Mr Samuels rather bluntly, whereupon Mr Samuels declares that he is eolniy to sue the doctor for slan der. The city of churches, as it is often termed, is an excellent place, now ever, for a penitentiary, insane aivlum, or a church. Any of the above named insti tutions will thrive in Salem." "Week hefore last a gentleman, who is not a resident of this county, happened to be in Corvallis for the first time since last summer, and without any suggestion from anybody he remarked that lie thought the streets ot I his town were in a worse con dition than those of any town he had been in. Last week another resident of anoth er county was in Corvallis and made a similar remark. The latter gentleman had taken an extensive walk oyer town." Benton Lender. "Coll Van Cleve has given birth .o another paper. Its the Scio Frees, a kind of a parody on the old Yaqulna Post. Van is a great newspaper man and has a facul ly of always filling up the columns of a newspaper'with something original, even though it may neither be newsy or neat. A private dispatch received at this city placed the estimated losses to N. W. insurance com panieJ. by the Seattle fire, as follows : Northwest, $250,000 ; Columbia, $75,0-0 ; Pacific, $50,000. Besides these the Oregon will probably lose $30.00 to $40,000, the State of Salem perhaps $10,000, and the Seattle companies are total wrecks. As there were over too other companies rep resented there their risks cannot be esti mated.
