Daily Democrat A LE5S0?i IN POLITICAL ECONOMY. Whit Is a trust ? It U a combination of individual , or cor porate produce What is Its object ? Its object Is to absorb the profits of scar city and decree famine. How can that be in this free country ? Because in order to make a trust success ful, It is necessary to restrict the produc tion of commodities. How does that benefit the individual members of a trust ? By creating an aitificial scarcity they are enabled to (and do) raise prices. Does doing so decree famine ? . Certainly. In order to create an artificial scarcity, they must force their work peo. pie it to Uleness by closing down so many months in the year, or days In months. Idleness means to most working people famine or partial starvation. What do the men who form trusts say of them! Oh t They say a trust is merely an asso ciation of business men to regulate prices and protect those belonging to it from ruin ous competition a purely business transac tion. What excuses have they when they throw their employes into enforced idle ness f They excuse themselves from shutting their employes out of mill and mine on the theory of over production and then excuse themselves for raising prices on the theory of scarcity it Is a purely business transac tion, you know. How do trusts reduce wages ? By forcing into idleness thousands of working people, in order to produce an ar tificial scarcity of work, thus making the competition among people for work more keen and thus reducing the wages. If work people are paid according to what they produce as is claimed by most employers, how can the enforced idleness of the few cut down the wages of many? Working people are not paid according as they produce, except in rare instances, they are only paid out of what they pro duce. Every workman knows there is free tradt in labor and that competition for leave to toil can and does reduce wages . irrespective of the toiler's ability to pro duce. Raising the standard of ability does not raise wages, under the present indus trial system. Are trusU voluntary associations ? Oh, yes ! They are all voluntary of course, but if any individual or company of producers, shows signs of backwardness about joining, they are whipped into line by competition, or I should say by a con spiracy to ruin. What aie the result of trusts ? Low wages, or no wages to working peo ple high piices to consumers and for tunes to those who form the combinations. Explain again the result oi trusts on wa ges. Trusts, in order to produce a scarcity, force people into idleness. To thoe un fortunates thrown out of work.it means no wages for an indefinite time and lower wages when work is resumed again. Work, ing people are generally glad to get back to work after a period of enforced idleness even at reduced wages. When working people earn least, or earn nothing, then trusts are making fortunes for their members. Skeletons in the closets of royal families continue to rattle. The recent death of the young Emperor of Annam is now looked upon with suspicion. According to Dr Lagrange of Bordeaux, who was form erly employed in the court of Hue, when the Regency Council resolve to get rid of an unsatisfactory emperor they present him with three dishes, on one of which there is a dagger, on the other a silken cord, and on the third poison. His impe rial majesty has only to take his choice. The politicians of the wooden nutmeg state are as shrewd peddlers as ever they were. A few days ago the legislature voted not to submit to '.he people a consti tutional amendment of the prohibition party's proposal. Since then the Massa chusetts election has been held. The re sult emboldened the republicans. Confident that the amendment would be rejected by the people, they reversed their previous action and on Friday voted to submit it. This is the way the party of great moral ideas plays at statesmanship. Ex-President Cleveland's horses and carriages are to be sold at auction In Wash ington some time this week. He had at the White House and Oak View stables quite n handsome equine establishment. At first Mr Cleveland thought that he would keep the seal browns, the bays and his favorite single horse, but a few weeks ago he decided to sell them air. In this he follows the course pursued by Mr Arthur. The announcement is made that Senator Payne, of Ohio, will not be a candidate for re-election. He told a Washington corre. Kpondent the other day that he was eighty years of age and had no desire to remain longer In public service. Is not Mr Payne setting a bad example to Ohio men gener ally ? The real southern question is how the negro can make an honest living and get an educa tion; and this, as every sensible person knows, is no question at all at least, it is a question that is rapidly settling it self without -the aid of politics and politicians.
