Yesterday the United States grand jury, In session at Portland, lound Indictments ajjainst Sheriff Small man and his Deputy, D S Smith, for con tempt of Court.in allowing VV R McDaniel, a U S prisoner, the liberty of the city of Albany. They were arrested to-day by a Deputy Marshal at Portland and will be taken before Judtfe IJeady . The facts are familiar to our citizens. The case was a peculiar one.and no one here ever thought any thing out of the way In the little lib erty given Mr M;Danicl. Go Barefooted. A day or two ago we mentioned the fact that an eastern man did not locate a boot and shoe store here on account of there being no room and that he left for soma place with plenty of vacant stores, probably Salem. The Jour nal gets even with us as follows: "He looked Albany over, thinking to locate there, but as most of the denizens of that city go barefooted he thought shoes would be a luxury and unsalable." Doubled His Money Last evening Mr Hub Bryant sold to Mrs I N Woodle ten acrcj adjoining the City for $7000, This is the property Mr Bryant about two months ago purchased of Jay Blain, paying $3500 for it, and for which Mr Blain paid $1000 a year ar two previous. It will now be In order for Mrs Woodle to get $15,000 (or the Urnd, Judge Denny. News from Asia is to the effect that Judge O N Denny, adviser to the Corean King, has received from LI Hung Chang $30,000 in coin and will re turn to Oregon. No doubt Judge Denny will be very glad to return to his native land, having had all the notoriety one man can wish in a foreign country. As in this case he has always come out on top. There will be a meetin; of the members of the alumni of the Albany Collegiate Institute on Thurs day of next week, to make arrangements for commencement exercises, time and place to be named hereafter. Oklahoma, the famous land to be opened to settler, on the 26th instant, is almost exactly the size of Linn county, and there are estimat ed to be nearly 50,000 people hovering around it to take it up. The following tabular statement shows the number of school districts together with the number of pupils in each and the amount of ppbllc funds drawn by each as apportioned by County School Superin 'endent Curl. The total amount apportion. eJ is $25,448.40. Whole number of pupils in the county 5694. In making the appor tionment $50 is set apart for each district after which the remainder is apportioned per capita. The rate per capita is $3.60.
