Tne Philadelphia Times says : Fifty years ago the daughter of James Martin, a well to de farmer, purchased an expensive dress against his wishes, and she sent him a comic valentine representing a miser. He has not spoken to her since. Last week he died and left $15,000 to each of his chil dren but this daughter, for whom he left a sealed envelope, which when opened had her old valentine inside. It is every day growing more evident that the rise in wages that our republican orators talked about in case of republican victory was the wages of congressmen. The wages of the laboring man are being steadily reduced. As the increase,if there had been one, would have been credited to the change, will our friends, the enemy, assume the decrease and not n.urmur ? From our regular correspondent. WASHINGTON. Washington, April 1st, 18S9. Have Harrison and Blaine any influence with the republican Senate ? If so, how much ? Since the Senate, by the very de cisive vote of 25 to icj.rejected the nomina tion of Murat Halstead, editor of the Cin cinnati Commercial Gazelle, to be minister to Germany, these questions have been asked on every hand and many answers have been given. It is well known here that Harrison and Blaine took occasion to inform every republican Senator that they were very deeply interested in Halstead's confirmation and yet the Senate voted against his confirmation, only nineteen favoring it,and two f them were democrats Messrs Blackburn and Call. Therefore the inference is that Harrison and Blaine have no very great amount of influence with the Senators of their party. This re jection of Halstead by republican votes is a very queer thing, and is likely to make trouble for some of the parties for a long time to come. That the democrats should have voted against his confirmation was to be expected, but what puzzles people here abouts is why such a rampant bloody shirt waver as Ingalls should have joined them. Halstead's opinion of those republicans who voted against him will make mighty inter esting reading. "Corporal" Tanner says no clerks will be removed in the Pension office except for cause. We shall see. "If Whitelaw Reid does not return to this country in disgrace I shall be greatly surprised," caid a well known republican to me to-day. Upon my asking his reason for thinking so, he said : "Reid is heavily interested in a corporation that is nothing more nor less than a business fake. One end of it rests in Washington, where it is looked after by one of the shrewdest as well as most unscrupulous men in the country. Both Reid and this man, w ho by the way is now in Europe, were roped into this scheme and have now got many thou sands of dollars tied up in it. They have long ago agreed that the best thing to do was to unload the whole thing on European capitalists, and for that purpose the Wash ington member of the affair went to Eu rope about ten days ago, and is now await ing Reid's arrival. Of course Reid will endorse the Washington man, and his off! cial position as U. S. Minister to France will cause his endorsement to have great weight with European financiers, and the probabilities are that the unloading of the fake will be a success. It will not take long for the purchasers to discover that they have been robbed, and that Reid's endorsement did It. Then f" General Black, ex-Commissioner of Pen sions, has gone to Chicago, where he will resume the practice of law. It Is said that Gen Joseph E Johnson, Commissioner of Railroads, will not be re moved by the new admlnistration.owlng to a request from Gen Sherman asking for his retention. Tulius Gradwohi, It is announced in a Washington des patch that Corporal Tanner,now in charge f the Pension Department, proposes to make a clean sweep. He will turn out his experienced bureau chiefs and clerks at once and fill their places with men who will be entirely subservient to hi wishes. It would seem to be poor policy for the Corporal to fill up his department with people who know no more about the bus! nees than he does hlmself.but the Corporal is out for the surplus and the offices. If he can pension everybody in the United States he may be able to make a race for the Presidencv himself. It is somowhat difficult tget the soil in an orchard too rich. And many fail to secure profitable crops of fruit for no other reason than f that the sou is deficient in plant food that is available for the use of the growing trees.
