The capital stock of the compuny is placed at $700,000 dollars, and besides the incoporators II Ames, and John McChesncy will have stock in the company represented by their claims The value of their claims will be placed at half the capital stock and the remainder will be put on the market. Reports of ad ditional good finds come to Albany d.iily, and the number of prospectors filling the mining region has greatly increased, An Albany gentleman recently in the mines says he coulil write a slartling account of the prospects there. He scraped up twen ty dollars worth of gold in a short lime, getting a ninety cent nugget. .Within a year or two the Santfotn mines will be as famous as the Cocr D'Alene. A Fkiiip with Tkamim. The other day, at Farmington, W. T. a pitched battle took place betwoon the crew of the passenger train and four tramps, who had been attempting to steal a ride aud otherwise making themselves obnoxious. Coupling pins, lists and club wore put to lively use, aod the faot that one of the tramps received a broken rib at th hands of a brakoman, only seemed to aug ment the anger of the gang, and they savage -ly continued the fight. They were compell ed to desist at the poir.t of revolvers, and moved away slowly and sullenly. In the evening a party was organized in Farmiogtob to hunt up the tramp, and all four were captured. Twi were taken by a stratagem. A brakeman was sent on before, apparently alene and unprotected. When loins distance ahead of his friends he was savagely attack ed, but the party rushing to his rescue soon collared the two varmints, and marched them triumphantly to jail. A Drill, The fire department gave a public drill last evening that displayed tin efficiency of the department to good effect. Four powerful streams were thrown at one time by the two steamers, while the hook and ladder company had ladders In all di rections. An exciting affair highly en joyed by the- large audience was a fight from the tops of the Cusick and Pipes buildings across the street with full streams of water, the nozzlemen getting a big drenching. The Circus. Farine McMahon'a hue pictorials decorate the dead walls annonnc ing an appcaran-je at Albany, April 12th. The San Francisco Examiner of recent date says : "The performances given by the Farine McMahon show now at Central Park are the most artistic and the best given by any circus in this city since Farine's last visit ten years since." The county teachers' Institute convened j In this city Wednesday evening, at the opera house, with a good attendance of teachers from the county at large. Miss Kate Price, of the Albany public schools, delivered theaddiess of welcome, a thoughtful well worded effort. Prof E Ii McEiroy responded, and as well delivered a short dissertation on teachers' examinations, speaking forcibly in favor of the new system, which greatly raises the standard of teachers, a progrcs sive, ambitious system. I'rot vanJC(iy, 01 the v illamette Univer sity, delivered an able address on the quail- ncationsot teachers, giving some sound ad- ce. Some fine music was furnished by the glee club composed of Rev l'richard. O II Irvine, i'rot Lee, VYm Fortmiller, Doc Woodworth and Mr Scars. THURSDAY MUK.VINtl. The Institute was called to order by Su perintendent Curl. The subject of primary teaching was presented to the meeting by Mrs Thrall, of the Albany Public schools. The speaker divided teaching reading into the alphabet ic, word, object and sentence methods. The cbject method was briefly explained as be ing prctcrablc. the primary method ef teaching writing and arithmetic was also presented. The subject was then discussed extensively by Piofs McEiroy, Walker, Geddes, De Vaney and others when the merits oi the word and alphabetic methods were sharply contrasted. Profjewett of Ilarrlsburg proceeded to present the subject of "How to succeed in teaching in district schojls." In order to succeed a teacher must understand"what is success." The family must look to the moral and industrial training, the Sabbath school must look after the moral and the public school must look after the intellec tual development. The speaker.as to school government, found the rules adopted by the state board for the government of public schools sufficient to control a schooi. Let pupils know that these rules are as effec tively the law of the state as any other law in the state. The teacher in order to sue ceed must be fully equipped. Last year's knowledge is not suthcient. He must be abreast with the latest and best methods, He must love his work and must be en thusiastic. Prof. Mitchell took the floor and dis cussed the subject of compulsory education showing the result of such a system. In stitute adjourned till 1:30 p. 111. AFTERNOON SESSION. Institute met and was called to order by Superintendent Curl. After roll call Prof Hunt delivered an address on the subject of vocal music in the common schools. I lis address was full and replete with arguments showing the benefits of vocal music among the young. The subject was discussed at length by sev eral teachers present. The subject of "School (jlovernment" vas presented to the Institute by Prof Walker, of the Albany Public Schools. The finest teaching capacity is often lest on account of lack of disciplin. The speaker charac terized flogging to secure good government as demoralizing to the teacher as well as brutalizing to the community. The enrollment of the teachers showed the following present: Albany t M Mitchell, Isabell tiray, Clarr McMeeken, Lizzie Pnrrott, Linnie Ramsey, IJorena Marshall, Anna jowell, Agnes E Wheeler, A M Phillips, W D Ris ley, J D Gulss, Lura Cambell, (J A Wnlk- tr, InaL Kobertson, Anna 1' linn, settle uassett, isabelle liodine, Jane Morris, 1. .11- r : . 1 : .. u 1. , r iilount, Jennie Ulount, Millie Colby, Kate Price, Airs Susie Thrall, J A Bilyeu.
