Daily Democrat Mr, Blaine may not hare much influence with this administration, but hit 'fellows' seem to get there all the same. The only sound basis for a party to rest upon is the respect of the pesple, and this is forfeited nhen it sells its offices and honors for money. President Harrison, Secretaries Maine and Tracy and Attornty-General Miller do not shave at all. Secretary Proctor Jshavesonly the upper lip. Secretaries Noble and Rusk shave the sides of the face. Secretary Windom wears side whiskers and Postmaster-General Wana ntaker takes a clean shave all around. The official guillotine isgctting in good work in' order and Democratic heads are beginning . to drop. President I Iarrison may have some excellent opinions on civil-service reform, but with Blaine, Clarkson, Klkins & Co. in posses sion of the handle the machine will be kept busy. In his whole term President Cleveland did not remove a single postmaster In Ore gon holding a presidential office, but every republican postmaster was allowed to serve his term out. In less than one month Har rison removed the postmaster at Oregon City. "Snivel" service. The president has removed the post master at Oregon City because he is a democrat and appointed John M. Bacon be cause he is a republican. An opinion decidedly adverse to the tneorv ot making members ot Congress office blotters for their states is cited from Mr. Blaine's "Twenty Yearsin Congress.' In that work the present Secretary of state declares that "ne reform in the Civil Service will be valuable which does not release members of Congress from the care and embarrassment of appointments." That Congressmen do not, for the must part.de sire to be relieved from this "care and em barrassment" does not detract from the truth of this observation. Queen Victoria has grown very petulant of late and her manner begins to show that she is getting pretty well on in years. Though every prevision had been made for her comfort at Biarritz she was pleased with nothing and has refused to remain there. Andre.v Carnegie has written a letter to the Manufaclurtrs' JtecorJ, of Baltimore, giving his views upon the iron Interests of the South, based upon his observations during a recent visit. He says the furnaces and machinery now employed in the iron business in the South are ot the latest pat tern. The quality of thecoal,re and lime stone is of the best. Under these favora ble conditions Mr Carnegie says the high est grade o! foundry pig car, be made in Alabama for $10 per ton, and at some of the bestlocated furnaceseven cheaper. In view of these facts, he regards the South as certain to become Pennsylvania's most formidable industrial competitor in the fu ture. This is In accord with our prediction of mere than three years ago. Coining from a person so thoroughly identified with the iron and steel interests of Pennsylvania Mr Carnegie, It certainly cannot be re garded as the prediction of an enemy. The Democrat is badly In need of an editor who can write up the interests of the town in a manner acceptable alike to the frisky, lively, progressive citizens who are always on the "push" as well as the old "mess backs" who growl and snarl when shaken up out of the old ruts ; an editor who can treat of public school matters alike acceptable to truth, trustees, teachers and patrons ; one who can comment upon religieus questions so as to please and edify both saint and sinner ; one who can dilate upon the habit of drunkenness and the dramshop business so as to satisfy the pro hibitionist as well as the saloon keeper ; one who can write long dissertations on the subject ot taxation in such a manner as to meet the approval of the tax payer as w ell as the tax eater ; one who can suggest a plan by which the buyer and seller both can make handsome profits in their dealings with each other ; one who ran explain how a man may be taxed for the benefit of an other and yet be benefited himself.
