The manufactures of sugar lrom glucose and the makers of maple sugar are kicking over the senate bounty to cane, beet and sorghum sugar producers. They claim that the discrimination is unjust, and their claim for government foster ing is as" good as those of the others. The glucose people put their production of "grape sugar at 550,000,000 pounds a year, and provide market for a big lot of corn. Vermont alone produces over 1 1,000,000 sounds of maple sugar but it is so wedded to the paternal style of gov. ernment that there ahould be no squirming there over its natural fruits. But the bounty business b more honest and courageous than the stealthy pocket-picking of the monopoly tariff system. TELEGRAPHIC NEWS Blood Boiling. Seattle, W. T., Feb. 12. War has broken out again over possession of the mud flats, and is altogether likely there will be bloodshed be- fore it ends. A syndicate of Seattle citizens some time since, caused 1200 feet to be enclos- d by piles.at a cost of several thousand dollars. Some di ys since P. Wickstroin, an oysterman, built a house in the middle of the inclosurc, having taken up an oyster claim under the pro visions of the the territorial law. lie was not disturbed until yesterday morninr. when the syndicate began to drive piles for a wharf. This aroused Wickstrom, and last night he took twenty-hve men, with guns anu axes, and cut down about fifty of the piles which had been previously driven. To-night a party of oyster- men, armed as last night, went to the scene of the former occurrence and started to cut down piles, but they were somewhat confused when they found a man with a Henry rifle guarding every pile. BInine the .Man. San Francisco, Feb. 12. A special to the Examiner, Dem., says: Blaine will be Fresi- dent Harrison's secretary of state unless he recalls a letter of acceptance which he mailed aooui mrec weeks ago. General Harrisons re voved the matter for a long time in his mind and about the time. Blaine came to Washing ton to live he had almost determined not to ap point him. Further reflection, however, and the importunities of Blaine's friends, led him to the feeling that Blaine would do less harm in the cabinet than out of it. The Michiean Farmer says there is "No use trying to kill such insects as the chinch bug, gray-back squash bug, plant and bark or scale lice, with paris green or London purple. This class of insects insert the beak or proboscis into the substance of the plant and suck out the sap. hence they never get any poison.". The president has approved the bill creat' ing the department of agriculture and immediate ly appointed Norman J. Colemen as Secrete ry the department. Mr. Coleman is now commis. sioner of agriculture and a most competent and faithful official. Waeon road bills appropriating more than $77,000 have passed both houses of the legis lature and many more are pending. This destined to be the most unpopular legislature that ever convened in Oregon, The West Side Telephone and Register pub lished at McMinville have consolidated. The new paper, as were both the old, will be demo, cratic. We wish the paper success both politi cally and financially. Morelocks bill to appropriate $1000 to make a public park at Sodaville has been indefinetelY postponed in the house. This kills it. Just Like Them. San Francisco, Feb. 12. The divorce case of W. H. Kinross against Annie M. Kinross is set for trial to-morrow, but owing to the fact tnai a settiemen nas been made out ofcourt the case will probably be dismissed. Good, Virginia, Nev., Feb. 12. It is now est". mated that the lottery amendment has been de- leated by 300 votes. The anti-lottery law that foryears has been a dead letter will now be en forced and probably church raffles will be pro-" hibited, as coming under the same law. Bound to Get There. San Francisco, Feb. 12. A. L. Maxwell, general passenger and ticket agent of Oregon Railway & Navigation Company, who was in town to-day, was interviewed on the subject of . what is termed here to be a secret movement of the Southern Pacific upon the Puget sound Pacific would doubtless rather get into Seattle over another company's line and make a traffic arrangement with that line lrom Portland to the Sound, tho latter did not want to let such a powerful competitor into that section, and was trying to fight the Southern Pacific off. The Southern Pacific however, is evidently bound toget to Seattle. Women Bicyclists. 1 New York, Feb. 13. Miss Armaindo re mained on the track in the bicycle race but a short time to-day. She was looking very poor ly. At I P.
