The Father of the Houce has far too much of the obstinacy of o'.d age to have changed his purpese in less than a twelvemonth; and he is not a Stanford to be bought off for a penny a pound. That bill of Condon's (House Bill No. 104) to increase the State University tax from one-tenth to one-seventh of one mill and to make tuition free for those who en ter any of the literary departments of the University should be knocked out on the first round. Young gentlemen who take advanced literary courses should not ask that the tax payers of the state should be taxed to meet the expense of such course. Let the bill be defeated. ' The Rev. Dr. Burchard, whose three "R's" at a crisis made him famous, is stay ing at the same hotel in Washington which shelters James G. Blaine. This is not the first time since 1SS4 that Blaine and Burchard have lodged beneath the same roof. During Mr. Blaine's sojourn in Eu rope he was.more than once, a fellow-guest with Burchard at hotels in Eng.and and n the Continent. There is something weird and grotesque about the fate which throws these men together. The number of millionaire Senators, es timated now at from thirty to thirty-two, or nearly one-half the entire Senate, has been increased by the choice of Gen. W.D. Washburn to succeed Sabin trom Minne sota. Washburn is a railroad President, is werth $5,000,000 and lives in a million-dollar house at Minneapolis. He was born at Livermore, Me., in iS3t, and is a graduate of Bowdoin College. He made his money in lumber. A first-class American watch, well kept, will last thirty or forty years, or sometimes even longer, befor ! the works wear out, but the average life of an ordinary low priced American watch is ten years.and that of a Swiss watch of the same grade seven years. The length of life for a watcn depends largely en the number of its jewels. The range of prices for American watches runs from $5 to $500, the costliest being a split second minuic register timing watch. In the United States about 3,500 watches are manufactured every day. The Waltham factory turns out 1,500 per day and the Elgin factory between 1,200 and 19,000. NOT MODEST. Some communities like individuals are not overburdened with modesty. Such is the character of some of the counties now asking for appropriations from the state to build wagun roads. Fell of Morrow wants $10,000 to build a road from Heppner up to Monument, and yet Morrow pays only $4,122 taxes to the state. That county would take back all she pays into the state treasury and $6000 paid In by other coun ties. Crook of Coos wants $14,000 to build a road out In Curry, which county pays ti.Si 2 taxes to the state. Maxwell of Tilla mook wants $10,000 to build a road in his rounty and yet that county pays but $1,212 state taxe. Hunter of Wallowa wants $8,000 to build a road up In his country, and the county he represents pays $2,299 Into the state treasury Such is the char ncter of the road bills which are now be f ore the Legislature. Mr. Spurgeon, the celebrated Baptist preach, cr, is unable to take exercise at Mentone be cause of the swelling ol his feet.
