P. Nutting. PORTLAND AND THE REST OF US. The splendid manner in which the Portland business men were received here, and the attention paid them, aug urs well for the pleasant relationship between Albany business men and Portland business men in the future, as well as in the past, which is well. It is true the trip is made in the in terest of Portland; but that is some thing not particularly serious with Al bany, one of several small cities visit ed, as it has always been able to take cure of itself in an interchange of benefits. Any movement looking to a closer fellowship among the cities of the state is commendable and deserves encouragement and a good word, as it passes. The population of Portland is more than all the other cities of Oregon combined, built up to quite an extent by immigration from other cities of the state. Perhaps a thousand people in Portlat d have formerly resided in Albany, and every city can tell of many. Nevertheless, the smaller cit ies are also made up of immigration fro mthe country and towns, so it is a matter in which all are striving alike, and we must take our medicine in tli outcome whatever.it is. ' Among several fire alarms sounded the pur.t few weeks it is doubtful if n single one has given the box number correctly, causing confusion and un certainly. The great thing in a fire is getting on the ground early, and also in not having an alarm from accident, always an expensive affair. Hence the alarm system, as well as the ap paratus, should be kept in first-class order. Just now there doesn't seem to be much attention paid To it, no one taking the responsibility very seriously. This is one reason why in many cities people arc looking to the commission form of government for relief. That makes the responsibility individual, and things are done, in stead oi being left undone.
