Hamilton's Bazaar - Apprentice girls to work in the' Fathei Hucileberry at the Legis lature. By W. S. Gordon. Up on the tanch the other day, By a sudden freak o' nature, I said "Susannah let's go down And see the legislature." We started, wt'h the boys along, As my woman said, because They'll always sort o' imitate The makers of the laws. And we want to give 'em high ideals And keep their habits straight, And what could be a better place Than this galaxy of state! And soon we saw a brindle cloud A lioverin' in the sky I said it was an extra ''shoot" To keep the atatehouse "dry." . It seemed to issue from the dome, And from the senate winders. But we bo'dly climbed thesteps of stone, And saw no fire nor cinders. Just tllen a IeIlow swun the door Susannah screamed, and Jack Yelled "fire!" as from the door there rolled A cloud of blue and black. And the smell would knock a Durham down, But up a man and spoke, "It's just the legislature At its reg'lar yearly smoke." We breathed a spell, then ventured in The misty, murky mill. Where solons wiBe smoke out their eyes While the people pay the bill. With dizzy brains they cropt about Or filled their new-bought seats, And languidly debated bills On "hatpins, crabs, and sheets." the only time they couldn't smoke, Was when votin' for "Our George1 That gave the lady clerks a chanco To lot their lungs disgorge. They had their noses all turned up And looked white around the lip Just like I've seen 'em look sometimes Aboard a buckin' ship. When that bill on cigarettes was up They smoked the faster then, And the little pages all looked wise And wished that they were men. A goin' home Susannah said: "We've got some felbws there That wouldn't make the state ashamed U they had a little air." And now the smokehouse on the ranch Is called "the legislature," But we smoke hams, not mutton heads With a lofty nomenclature. How long, Sweet Oregjn, how long, Must reason wreath in gall. Till such incarnate selfishness Is banished from your hall! Frenzied I lionglils. , Doubtless Senator Newlands' project for a white man's country will have tho sincere support of Senator Tillman. In view of the high cost of living, this would be a good time to test the elliciencv of getting up from the table hungry. The noiseless gun seems to be a suc cess, but what is most needed is a gun which will be harmless when not loaded. It iB our unshaken conviction Hint two nations desiring to dwell together ill international pence and concord aro not going to be diverted from their original purpose by a lot of near-statesmen and jingoes scattered around and about the United States. We have a few sott yellow mountain fir shingles on hand at a minimum price. They are 'dandies". We dip yotr shingles in Creosote oil stain when de sired. Thompson & Cramek.
