Installation. 50 YEARS A STATE. Oregon is now fifty years old. To morrow will be the anniversary. Fath er Lane of this city has a copy of the States, a journal of vVashington, D. I'., of Feb. 14, 1859, which has the follow ing on the passage of che bill admitting Oregon to the Union, which will be r:ad with interest: "The admission of another state into tin Union, caused much enthusiasm on Saturday eveanig, and when the event ecame generally known throughout the city, it was determined to celebrate it. At about half past nine o'clock, the Marine band, headed by a large concourse of citizens, matched to Brown's Hotel. After the execution of several spirited airs, Gov. Stevens of Washington Territory, appeared on the balcony and briefly introduced Gen eral Joseph Lane, Senator elect from the State of Oregon. Gen. Lane made the following re marks: Gentlemen and Fellow Citizens: With all my heart I thank you for this mani festation of the high sense of the im portance of the admission of Oregon. Another State has been admitted into the Union, and you have the kindness to come and rejoice with me. We have cause to rejoice. Our whole country has cause for gratulation: for in mv judgment, the admission of Oregon is a great event a national blessing; and I look upon this day s work as the great est Congress has ever performed. It is an event for which I have for months labored with all the energies of my nature. Our hopia have been crowned with success; and Oregon is one of the States of our grand Union. And in conclusion: Twenty States have been added to the Union since the establishment of our independence, and' it is gratifying j to know that each and every one of them has been admitted under Demo cratic administrations, or by a Demo cratic Congress. I The annual meea of the- Mrs. Shelton will make a good Gov- Count Prohibltion Qub wiu be Linn held Brownsviiie, Ore., Feb. 1909. Mr. Editor: In your issue of yesterday we notice under '"Legislative Doings," new bills were: "Munkers by request of A. A. Tuss ing, authorizing executors and admin istrators to execute deed where bond had been made by deceased, also re pealing law requiring written consent of county court before property of a minor can be sold." If taken literally, above indicates some attempt to overthrow present practice. and I would not like to be so understood. As to puwer of executors and administrators to execute a deed where bond for deed made by deceased,, this power already exists by statute-, but by new bill it is sought to give such power as to -ANY wri :ten contract for the sale of realty of decedent whether in the FORM of a bond for deed or not. As to requiring consent of Coun ty Court befere property of minor can be sold, such should still remain the 1 aw nor 13 it sought to change such require ment, but after the court has made the order of sale, Sec. 6600 requires as to wards not minors that "the County Court shall certify In writing its ap probation of the proposed sale." Sec. 5600 is doubtful in meaning, tbe com piler of code by headlines construing it to be the "certificate of commission i ers" that was necessary. An old pro , vision of the act uf 1853. never followed by court rir counsel, with no good rea son forits retention.it can be productive onlv of trouble and should be dropped from code by repeal. A.
