Fleetwood, ' INVESTIGATED by the Railroad Commission. Salem, April 13. Railroad Commis sioner Oswald West today returned from an inspection of the 0. R. & N. wreck near Pendleton. He says the company cannot be accused of negli gence as the accident was unforseen and a big force of men were working on the track at that place. A Horse Thief Case i Scio News: j Sheriff D. S. Smith called at the News office, yesterday. He stated his business in this locality was to serve a warrant on Anton Holub to appear in ; Prineville, as a witness in a criminal j action against one Erricson, who is ac cused of horse stealing. Erricson brought a bunch of horses down to Scio, from the Prineville country, last sum mer an I placed them on sale in scio and other valley towns. Mr. Holub I bought a fine black horse out of the . bunch, paying $140 for bim. Mr. Holub, j of course, is entirely blameless in the j matter. An effort will Erobably be made for his releast on ail which will be vigorously opposed. Died at Roseburg. Plaindealer: Martha A. Divine, wife of J. M. Di vine, an old soldier, died in West Rose burg on Monday, April 8, aged 61 years. Mrs. Divine was married September 10, 1865. In the year of 1881 they came West and settled in Oregon. September 1, 1905, Mrs. Divine and her husband were admitted to one of the cottages at the Oregon Soldiers Home, coming from Albany here. Deceased had been ill for some time of dropsy. She is sur vived by her husband, J. M. Divine. The couple were childless. Interment was in the Soldiers Home cemetery, and the funeral sermon will be preached at the Seventh Day Adventist church in West Roseburg, at 2 o'clock p. m., Sunday, March 14. O A JS "T O H X A . The total receipts of Brownsville the past year were $1,658.42, paid on war rants $927.58. Balance on hand $730.84. Oregon has ten mutual fire insurance companies and another is -proposed at Eugene. It seems to be the spirit of the day. Rev. J. E. Snyder, of Vancouver, a former Brownsville minister, has in creased the membership of his church from 69 to 200. The Salem high school team at Cor vallis yesterday afternoon defeated the O. A. C, team 4 to 0 in a fast amateur game. It is said that the California floods will mean a shortage of DOtatoes the coming vear, and hence a good market for the Oregon product, which promi ses to have a large acreage. Willamette University will run a sum mer school at Newport next summer, beginning July 1 and ending Aug. 9. A good faculty will be furnished for the work, headed by Dr. Mathews. Down at Jefferson. $70,573.97 is the amount of the de posits in the Jefferson Bank. The Re view gives this as an evidence of the prosperity of the town and declares that it doubts if there is any town of its size in the valley that can make an equal showing. The deposits in a bank I are a splendid indication of the busi ! ness or a city, speaking for the daily clearances. During the past year Alb any's deposits have increased over 40 per cent. MISFITS.
