It is to be hoped Eugene doe3 not have an epidemic of suicides. One man at the contest didn't like the orations because none of them re lated to his pet theme. So it goes. "Our old man" is putting in some pretty good licks these days in the gar den while Ann plays on the piano. Hon. C. A. Johns was at the orator ical contest, leaving this morning for the north. Now where were Geer and Withycombe, that's the question. The G.ai'd gives it as its opinion that Marshal Stiles was hounded to death. That for private reasons the charges, against him were impossible of being true. Four quotations from the democrat in a column in a Portland paper is not very bad. The Democrat keeps a rustling like a Chicago real estate man its columns readable. : Mark our word: no Willamette val ley trolley line will be permitted to enter Portland. Salem Journal. Mark our word, a Willamette valley trolley line will be permitted to enter Portland aLd put a spike in the fact. The svstem of markinsr of some of these contest judges makes one weary sometimes. For instance one judge marked a man 97 and another 49. No per centage should be allowed. It's always a tarce, only comparative num bers. "More Gone Wrong." Editor Democrat; Under the above heading an article appeared in last nights Democrat evi dently a knock by the North Western at the Mutual Reserve. Three officers of the Mutual Reserve are charged with having wrongfully paid $9,000 for attorney fees for de fending suits brought against them by a discharged employee. These suits were decided in favor of the Company; and the charge made against the officer is, at most, a mere techincal one, or it is only a question whether the officers should have defrayed the expense of the litigation out of their own pockets or from the funds of the Company. It is evident that the dismissed em ployees have taken this method of get ting revenge. A crowd of "knockers." because they were not allowed to run the City of Portland, caused the indictment of M ayor George H. Williams, ex-United States attorney general, but a jury of disinterested citizens found him innocent of any wrong. It is the accented opinion among men j that he who will lie about one thing win lie auoui anumer. in person who inspired the article in the Demo crat of last evening ' stated that the Mutual Reserve Life "Las a reserve of only about $360,000," whereas the actual reserve is $4,443,216. The read er can figure what percentage of truth there is in the other statements. g Is there anyone so foolish as to say that the Northwestern Mutual Life is not a good company simply because j mr. liigeiuw, winie one 01 lis aireciors, ! stole a million and a ha f dollars, was J tried and convicted and is new serving : a term in prison for the offense? j There are more than 50 good old-line I companies and the Northwestern stands well up in the list; but the Mutual Re ! serve guarantees to give its policy ' holders the most for their money, and ; will write it in the policy. Therefore, i ratios that the policyholder don't under stand are immaterial. If an agent can't compete, the public should not blame him too much for doing a little knocking. The Central Peed Sheds. J.
