He wae not aware that a freight train was doing aome faat switching, and be fore he knew it waa bit by a fiat car backing quickly through the yard, and nas knocked down upon the ground, bnt fortunately juet outside the track, escaping anythmg more than a little properanger, but rejoicing in hie nar row escape. THE LEGISLATURE. In the houso the different committees to examine varioua things were ap pointed. Cornettis on the committee to examine the books and accounts of the state inaane asylum and Bilyeu on revisions of laws. a Davey's bill to provide an additional erm of department 1 of the circuit ourt in the 3rd district passed. Hew House Dins are: nay, regulating banks and insurance, and fixing salaries of state officers, and a good many cor poration bills and amending the code on minor points. In the senate a bill by Daly prevents pools and truBts. A joint resolution pro vides for election of state and county officers in November instead of June. Joint resolution to permit state institu tione away from the capital passed. Gov. Chamberlain will sign the new Portland charter bill. An amendment has basn proposed to the constitution providing that each legislature shall provide for the com pensation of the state printer. The Linn county delegation reported i.. avor of the bill authorising the rmiiity court to establish a free ferry at Uarrisburg. Governor Ch amborlain yesterday ev evening announced his first apooint nient, that of Hon. J. W. Morrow of Heppner as state land agent. Ferhaps this signifies that the superintendent of the penitentiary will be a Willamette valley man, A Choice Musical. The fith annn al concert by the Thurs day Musical Club wae given last night at the United Fresbyterion church to a houBe full of the lovers of music of the city, every seat being filled. It was a very fine diiet program that was ren dered. MrB. Walter Reed, contralto, of Portland, was the soloist vocalist and Mr. Le Boy L. Gesner, of Salem the violinist. Mrs. Reed capti'red the aud ience in her splendidly selected solos, covering a wide range. She possesses a remarkable voice, displaying great sym pathy, backed by an excellent express ion. Her selections were : Berceuse, Godard; Shadows, Carrie Jacobs-Bond; The Danza, Chadwick; Shonggie Shou, Ma Bairnie, Henschel; Im Herbst, Franz; Obstination.Fontenaillee; Mam an Dites Moi, Weckerlin; Just a Wearyin' for You, Carrie Jacobs-Bond ; A Bed Bed Eose, Hastings; Annie Latino; Bosalie, DeKoven; and Jap anese Love Song, Hastings, besides a number of encores. Mr. Gesner per forms with rare skill on the violin, not only correctly but with excellent ex pression delighting the audience withhis interpretation of bia selections, which were : Concerto OpuB 104, Ch. de Beriot ; Spanish Tanze, Op. 22. Pablo ue Sar este, and a couple of pleaeing encores. Mrs. Frank Ketchum and Mrs. R. L. Burkhart performed as accompanists. Not the Bridge. A bill Introduced in the state legisla ture by Bepresentstive Bilyeu to amend the code is not in connection with the bridge at all as ha been reported, but refers to appeals from the recorders court as nearly aB can be learned. Th Bbidos. The Benton county people have petitioned the Benton county court to act with the Linn county court in making the bridge a free one. Following is their petition : "Your petitioners most earnestly ask that you will toke immediate action with the Linn county conrt to have the toll taken off the Albaoy bridge. Your petitioners represent that it is a matter of vital Importance to them that what ever action is taken should be takeB without delay, so that the petitioners may not be deprived of the opportunity of seeking redresB, of what they consider grievous wrongs in some other way, if relief is denied tbem by the honorable county courtB above named, and to that end the petitioners ask that some definite action be taken touching the matter ol said bridne and the ferry at CorvalliB and the rights and equities ol said counties in maintaining said bridge nid furry and the base of such equities, hMh nairi toll is at this time re- ,h nnt The solo object hereof is to piccipitate some early action on the part of said courts covering all end singular of the matter in the premises. Mr. Power Kicked Out of the Office. W. M. Stewart, recently appointed postmaster at Haleey, was in the city yesterday. The Herald in announcing the appointment stated that Mr. Alex ander Power, the present postmaster had resigned. Mr. Power authorises tbe Dbuocbat to state that this is not true at all. that he did not resign, but baa been kicked out of the office by di rection of the Linn County Republican central committee for political purposes. Mr. Power is a life long republican and has filled tbe office to tbe tatisfaction of Halsey people, and tbe Democrat is informed that there is general dis pleasure there over tbe change. STATE LEGISLATURE. representative Bilyeu presented a petition from Linn county asking that the game law be amended making the close season from Aug. 1 to Oct. 1, Re ferred. Among the new bills in tbe eenate are: By Mulkey; providing for a hop in spector and rate of tariff on hops; Mc Ginn, authorizing cities to appropriate water rights ; by Howe, fixing time for collection of taxes.
