Around Pendleton. Pkudlbton, Or., J an 25, 1903. Sanaa Democrat: Since my last letter t tie Dcit the BooslerJiBa, . rajptitl arouiwl Jhe ooantry s Utile nod ana a liu: wo' ol Umatilla county. My ia-t I rip through the country surrounding A darn., Athena, Weston and Helix, Adams i a town of aoout 800 poou.a lion and ia located oo the 0. K. & N. railroad, is surrounded by a fine farming country and la a large shipping point tor wheat aa Its large waretiou.ee will show, Athena ia a town of about 15u0 popula tion, ia a very proeperoua and lively lime Hamlet. It bIso ia snrfnuiided by a fl"u farming country, and a eo ia on the 0. E, AN. line, alao tbe W. & 0. B. B., and ia a great shipping point for wheat.. Ita B. K. ewitcbee are lined with mam month warehouses which are always filled to overflowing at the end of harvest. Weston ia lour miles aboye Athena and IB located in a canyon. It ia a very nice little place with a population of about 1200. Here ia where the Eastern Oregon Normal ecbool ia located, and the BooBtor had tbe p1eaeue of calling on President Martindale who haa built up tbe school wonderlully since ho bas been installed aa its President. Prof. Martin dale baa been quite poorly for eoroe time but i learned today that be ie much improved and iB ub'.o to walk out .on tbe streets attain. Leaving Weston 1 beaded 'or Helix. 12 milee west. Helix is built on a flat and it 20 miles from Pendleton on tbe line of tbe W, Se 0. R. B. It ia also a great wheat center, and baa at least a quarter of a mile of warehouses which are all (alter after harveat than a democrat at a oonventioB. A Btiantier standing on the streets of Pendleton, which Is surrounded by high hills, and seeing the hundreds of 4 and 8 horse teama coming in loaded with Wheat wondera where in the world it all Cornea from. A trip of four inilea south, eaat or north will bring you in eight of One ol tbe greateatoit wheat countries jour eyes ever rested on. Look where you will, north, eouth or east, and it is one vaat wheat field as far as tbe eye can xeaob. Four miles east of Pendleton I paBBad a ranch and saw what seemed to be tbree large Btraw ricks each about 120 by 20 or 25 feet, and as high aa an ordin ary Btraw rick. On oloser observation 1 law the ends of the ricks were open and to my surprise it was tbree vast piles of wheat and thousands and thousands of aaoks of wheat were stored under that Btraw and the sacks looked as bright as j When first threshed. There were alrjo I two large warehouses on tbe W. & 0. K, R. not more than ono-lourth of a mile from tbose three large piles of grain. Last Thursday mid Friday I was at Pilot Bock, IS mile south of Pendleton, which I have Bpoken of betore. The 0. B. & N. overland train which leit here this morninit at 5 o'clock was wrecked near Bingham Bpringe, about 22 miles east of here. Engine, tender and three cars wen', through a bridge. The engineer and Fireman were killed, one paesenger badly hurt and several passeugers slightly injured. The acci dent wiib caused by high water loosening a bent letting the bridge go down under the weight of tbe engine. It has been raining and blowing here and haa melted tbe frozen fog which has eauBed considerable high water. Scarlet fever and nieaaela are quite bad here but eo far aa known there are no caaea or amall pox. Will It be Gear or tullon? I guesa no. Harvey ; I guess nix. Saok Roostsb. Teachers' Examinations. Kelley have both been mentioned fori tbe nomination fo.- OongreBS. To-day i hey compared notes and found that they were neck and neck The Panama eanal scheme as Btated by the Democrat in tne first place was of courBe a fake panned off upon the people in tbe interest of tbe railroads to defeat a canal entirely. A. Bush of Salem has sued two gentlemen of that city for $130 and 10 per cent interest. Mr. Bush ia a bard working man with several children and it is to be hoped recovers. An Albany young lady recently re ceived a propoaal, ending: "As tbe hart pantetb after water brooks so my heart panteth. after thee." As there was no pants in her heart tbe proposal was not accepted. Tbe expense of printing 500 copies of the Heoond Oregon Muster Roll, of which a copy has been received at the Democrat otBco, was $2500.90 or $5 a volume. Think Mr. Leeds might have knocked on the w cents. Members of the legislature upon ad' jourumont Friday were taken to Port land on a free special train. Tbe South eru Pucttto do.ja not run Bpeoial tralnB for fun, but for buainesB, in the interest ol legislation in its favor, and that is what members of the legislature every where receive freo passes while they continue in office for. "Mr. Fulton Is tbe reooguized choice of the whole people of tbe state for sen ator," says a sheet down the atate toward California, right in the face of tbe lact that at the June election tbe voters of tbe atate declared T. T. Geer to be their choice by considerable of a majority. There are papers in Oregon with sufficient gall to oall black white. The Oregon Blate legislature has begun the operation of dictating; to the Wash ington state legislature what Washing ton shall appropriate for the Lewis end Clark exposition, and demand that the mount be increased over $100,000, the eum proposed. Tbe more the better, but suppose tbis big exposition was to beat Seattle lnatead of Portland there would be a howl in Oregon If tbe amount wae too large. The damage to the approach of the-AI-bany bridge la approximately $200, easily ropaired. This will have to be paid by tbe city of Albany, besides wbicb the citizens will pay about a fourth of the $15,01)0 or $20,000 damage to the other bridges of the county. Ia it possible that there aie any people in the county outside of Albany who would ob ject to having this $200 made a county expense n future occaaiona. Next wooK 2 days only Feb. the 4 and 6 Dr. Lowe the oculo-opticlon will be in Albany at The Hovere House. If yon need glasses be sure and eee him.
