College Opening.
The lecture by President E A. Bryan
of the stato agricultural college, of Pull
man, Wash., last evening was a very ap
propriate opening for the enmiag college
year. The subject was The Develop
ment of Character, presented in an able
rumiLer. The importance of character
in connection with an education was en.
Urged upon in an Impressive manner.
Lineal descendants, political preferment,
wealth, are all small compared with
character. Character is law, net an
archy. All progress depends upon
character. Character education of the
mreeesis necessary to the existence of
the republic. Of the criminal classes
one-third are absolutely uneducated and
lour nuns practically uneducated. The
world wauls men ol decision of character
who will control evil, and not be con
trolled by it. When you possess char
acter no one can rob jou of it but your
self. It is a hi lee way to judge men by
their wealth of power. The true tost is
character. The speaker gave a number
ol interesting character sketches and
made a strong plea to the bova and
girls present to do something and he
some.bing, riBing lo a high culluro with
character as ire foundation.
Albany College has nlwavs made a
feature of education the building of
character, and the address was emphat
ically in keeping with the policy of the
school.
