A Urn ic Co 57 First, Street, Albany, Or. Tangent. Rev. Atkins, of Corvallis, delivered one of the ablest sermons last Sunday on the transfiguration of Christ that it has been our pleasure to hear for a longtime. The speaker has the happy faculty of a good delivery; he could 6oir high and come down without falling, He just kept the large congregation spell bound during his discourse. His text can be found in the first four verses of the 17 chapter of the book of Matthews. The district conference of the M. E. C. A. closed a very successful and interesting session here the first of the week. There were thirteen preachers in attendance, be sides a large number of delegates. Mrs. Dave Spangler, of California, is visiting her parents, John and Mary Beard, of Tangent. George and John Ileuck, sons of David Houck, have finished their education, and George has engaged in the drug business at Independence, and John has been offered a place. The brass band at this place has been engaged to play at Junction City on the 4th of July. Acco.-ding to authenticate account he will lead one of Tangent's fair damsels to the hymcnial alter en July 4. Mr. Sa-r. Bryant and Lelia J Knighton, of this place, were to be married this after noon at 4 oclock. Kev. Rounds omciat ing. Advices from Zanzibar to Journal des Dcbats say there is little doubt that Stanley is dead. The families of per sons who accompanied theexpedition have worn mourning for several weeks- It is believed Tippoo Tib had taken revenge for Stanley's having thwarted him in his ef forts to continue the slave tarilfic. Helena Thugs. Helena, M. T, June 19. For nearly three weeks Helena has been afflicted with a gang of professional burglars, who have robbed the residences of citizens with im. punitv and defied the efforts of the police to catch them. No less than thirty houses have been raided during that time without disturbing the occupants, Itlrli Lead Strike. . Lebanon, Mo., June 19. Mr. L. VV. Burris, Postmaster at Alinan, Hickory count;', about thirty-five miles northwest of here.was in this city to-day exhibiting some rich specimens which he took from a shaft he has sunk on his premhes near the Little Niague river. He said that in a shaft four by six feet and twenty-eight feet . deep he raised over 20,000 pounds . of ore like the samples exhibited, which will yield not less than c.i per cent of pure lead. At twenty-eight feet he tapped a vein of water 01 a cap rock, and wrs forced to resort to d: illing. It is ce tainly the richest lead in this county. Asinin Arrctfel. Portland, Or., June 19. W. G. The books have been partially expeited, and it is alle ged that, so far, the shortage foots up four tho.isanddolUrs. In the police court to day, Emervwnived examination and was placed under four thousand dol ais bonds. Newspaper Sensation. Macon, Ga., June 19. The Macon A'ews, an Intensely democratic paper, created a sensation yesterday by publishing a head, line at tlie top of the editorial columns, "The leading republican paper." What gave the an.iounc.nent effect was the fac' that the paper had violently assailed the free trade plank in the democratic plat form. The obnoxious line resulted in sud den curtailment of subscriptions, which brought the matter immediately Before the directors of the paper. An investiga tion proved that a malicious printer had in serted it surreptitiously.
