Population. 1870. .. ......., ..... ....... . .. ... 90,033 88o 174.768 ,885 :.... 194.150 Joo........ ...... ...305.000 IS Tlds ia an incrcaso of Borne 75 per 'cent, in ton years, afar larger increase than can bo shown for the period by California, or probably by any state oat side of tho now Northwest. And this is all tho more signiScant . from tho fact that this steady and healthy growth is not the result of any boom or fictitious excitement, but is tho result of natural increaso and the steady flow of incomers in Bearch of homes in this new state-. In fact the state has not oven been fairly advertised. Tho state cos issued a tow thousand para phlets descriptive of tho state and its , resources, and these have, with some ' local documents, been distnbuted through tli a Eastern states. When tho state of Kansas set out to advertise her - Belt some years ago, agents were eentto all the principal kingdoms of tho old world, and it was said that you could not find an obscure railway station in Great Brittun, France, Germany, Nor way, or any of the centers of popuhv uon of the old world, without meeting great flaring placards giving elaborate descriptions and minnte directions as to all the prospects and advantages of that prairio state. By this means an enorm ous foreign population was induced to come to that country, and tbo most of such immigrants mado most desirable citizens. All that has been done to ad vertise this state is bat a mere drop in the backet beside what might been done and what ought now to be done. This state has developed such manifold re sources during the past few years that its future is rendered peculiarly bright and promising. The future is assured. tmmmmattmnmmm From Newport. Nowport, It is a very difficult thing to please our Roseburg friends. Now because there is not much said about tho Drain railroad they think it is dead, as before, if much was said, it was opposition to the ttoseburg road. There has not been much said recently about either road, and the era of talk is about over. The engineers of both roads are in the fie) d, and while we are glad of any and every assurance that a line will be built to Boseburg we can assure the Koseburg papers that the Drain road is moving right on and there is now a great deal , more than talk .going on. The Drain road will be bnilt. A aslungton dispatch of Aug. 18th, Bays : "Oregon fares better in the river and harbor bill than ever before. With Mr. Hermann on the house committee and Mr. Dolph on the senate committee, the state stands third in the list. Sena tor Dolph has also been made a mem ber of the conference committee and it is quite likely that the senate increases will be maintained." The bill as it passed the senate contains the following items for this portion of Oregon: Improving entrance to harbor at Coos bay,125,000. Improving harbor at Yaquina bay, 9180,000. For the commencement of jetty con Btruction and re-examination of Port Orford harbor, with a view to ascertain it tue amount estimated for a harbor of refuge cannot be materially lessened, $5000. Improving the Coquillo river, (contin uing the improvement,) f30,000. - Improving the Umpqua river, $9000. Improving the mouth of Siuslaw riv er, to commence construction of jetty, $50,000. The following sorveys are provided for in the bill to bo made of Oregon rivers and harbors : Coos bay, improving upper harbor by removal of shoals. Coquille river, for deepening channel irom coquiue Uity to Myrtle Point to four feet at mean low depth. Tho San Francisco Chronicle of Aug, 18th says that an order will take effect which will result in the cutting off of one of California's important coal sup plies, the Carbonado mines of AVashing' ton. Odd as it may seem, this order ia simply one for the enforcement of the fish law In that state. It will have its effect in this city, for tho largest of the mines, tho Carbonodo, is owned by the Pacific Improvement Company, an or ganization of the Southern Pacific. ' .The law which threatens such dire results to coal mining prohibits the pol luting of any stream or water course by any meaus to such an extent that fish are injured thereby. The fish commis sioner of that state has notified Super intendent Davis, of the Carbonado mines, that coal must no longer be washed in the Carbonado river, a stream on which the mines are located. Tho coal is of such a character that it must necessarily be washed or it is prac tically useless, and the only stream available for tiiat purpose is the one which the commissioner has forbidden the miners to use. The result is that tho mines will be compelled to close, which will throw hundreds of men out of employment, and to an extont affect the coal trade in this city. .Vugast 22d, 1S0O. Ltbby Post Office. Editor Mail: I Ecnd you n few items from our little town to your val uablo paper. I arrived horo a few weeks ago, and noon utter my arrival found mj'self lo cated In h room at Geo. Quigley's hotel ; where I was warmly welcomed by that gentlemen and his accomplished wife. Mr. Qulgley is an old sea captain, who located hero several years ago, and Is loved and respected by all for his noblo generous qualities, and all who stops with him are mado to feol at homo, lie Is a bluff old fellow but has a heart as big as a locomotive Ho has two lovoly daughters. Goo. only weighs 2S0 poundB. I visited tho O. C. & N. company's store horo and had tho pleasure of meet ing S. Jorgenson, chief manager of tho merchantllo department, who took pains to show mo ovor tho place, nud gnvo mo such information as I desired, and did ovorything to mako my stay pleas ant. Mr. Jorgenson is spoken of by nil as a gentleman in tho truo sen so of tho word, and long before I reached the place I heart! of his many acts of kind ness to all with whom ho camo in con tact, and when I reached horo I found tho people loud in their praise, of his sterling qualities. I had also tho pleasure of meeting 11. Walters, tho superintendent of tho com pany's mine, who has been horo sover al years and has been connected with the English mines for years. He has made many improvements and, in fact, saved the company thousands of dollars. His smiling face is seen each day among the men, and he has a kind word for all; his men work liko troopers, knowing that their superintendent appreciates them and they all speak well of him The company did well to placo bo able a man to conduct their business. Mr. Enoch Gove, the gentlemanly and courteous book keeper is their beat man, he handles all tho cash, lie is one of the jolliest fellows (or was) till Undo Sam appointed him postmaster of Libby. Ho has bought a new high hat and looks as grave as a supreme judge. Ho is liked by all classes of people. Hr. Jorgcreon has just had a fino suit of rooms fixed up, and it is whispered that he will Boon take unto himself a better half, one of Newports lovely and accomplished daughters. John O'Connor has gono to Bandon to attend the Teacher's Institute. Ho is a bright young scholar, having taught here some time. His mother, Mrs. O'Connor, has had her fine residence all painted and papered and it looks likes a new dollar. Mrs. Miller gave birth to a sweet baby boy last night. Frank Kaynes new store is doing a thriving business. He is a brick. School closed one week to allow the teachers to attend the Institute. Little Billy Wren has just recovered from a long spell of illness. Master Paul Girod, tiio brave little boy who saved the life of a little girl from drowninc. received vesterdav a nice little gun for his bravery. Teddy Walters, son of Supt. Walters, gave a birthday party to his many little friends and it was an enjoyable affair. Teddy is a bright, manly littlo fellow, and I predict some day will stand be side some of our best men. Micky is still alive and thinks of start ing a hotel. New barber shop just opened. Mr. John Nyman still runs the cora panys engine. He is the gentleman who raised over one hundred and fifty. dollars for a poor widow woman at Marshfield. Antone Bertalino, the accomodating and jolly butcher is doing a lively busi ness, and the gentlemanly way he treats his customers brings all the ladies to his shop. He is the most popular man in town. He has lately been appointed D. 8. mail carrier from Libby to Marsh field. He has a fine boat to carry pas sengers to and from Marshfield, and he takes them safely through, especially the ladies. Wo havo a lovely place of some S00 people, all miners and intelligent hard working men. We have a fine school, a beautiful little church, and Sabbath school each Sunday with 8. Jorgerson as superintendent. The mines are runing full blast. Last Saturday the people had a grand social and dance, and it was a success. The night was spent with much pleas ure, telling stories, singing songs and dancing, until the wee hours of tho morning, nothing happening to mar the pleasures of those who were in atten dance. At 12 o'clock wo all sat down to a fine supper prepared by Geo. Qulg ley, and it was fit for a king. Among the many present were Mrs. Weir and her lovely daughters, Maggio and May, Miss Kuala Gamble, Miss Lizzie Kelley, Miss Cassio Quigloy, Miss Kate Goffee, Miss Martha Brynn, Miss Emma Chap man, Antono Bartolino, Alex Campbell, John Gamble, Mr. and Mrs. Qulgley, Mrs. Glrad, Frank Avery, John Ny man, Enoch Holland, 8. Jorgenson and many others. The best dancers by a vote were Miss Susie Gamble and Mr. 8, Jorgenson, and after singing tho dox ology we all went home to oar little beds. 108.
