says :
"Mr. Alford and Collie Harry camo
ovor thu mountain day before yesterday ;
this is the first time anyone has passed
over since about a week ago. John and
Gust McCulloch went over and aro car
rying thu mail from Kosoburg to Look
ing Glass. Alford and Harry said wo
would not get uny mail hero for months
as the snow is ton feet deep on the
mountains, and McCulloch says thoy
are not going to try and open more than
a pack trail, and unnK it win take n
long time to do that. Somo of the road
is nil gonu nnd there are hundreds of
trees in tho road. Thero was another
slide up at Laird's, which took away
tho wash-house and camo against the
corner of tho house doing some damage
Tho Orcgonian of Feb. 4th is full of
accounts of damage oy the Hoods nnd
storms. As n sainpjo of somo of the
damage dono to the railroad tracks is
thu following : "Capt. Coo walked from
Locks to Fairviow at tlio Cascades.
Tho track, ho said Is tho worst lie ever
saw. Ho counted fifty-four landslides
and washouts between Locks and Trout
dale, some of them being so extensive
that it is doubtful if tho railroad com
pany will ever make tho repairs. It
may bo cheaper for them to build tho
track, around some of .tho larger slides.
At a point somo soven or eight miles be
low Bonneville, a whole mountain has
como down n distance of two or three
thousand feet, covering tho track to a
dopth of nearly eighty feet. It is a
solid mass nearly 000 feet long, nnd
composed almost of rock alono,"

Tlio Norn Harkins was towed into San
Francisco last Saturday, tho 8th, after a
rough experience. Sho left San Fran
cisco for Humboldt on Dccumber 31st,
and encountered heavy wenthor from
tho start. In a sovero southwesterly
galo on January 14th sho lost hor rud
der in latitudo 40 deg. 40 min. north and
longitude 124 deg. west. Captain Fos
ter rjggod up a rudder out of n plank
and had been working witli this precar
ious steering gear ever since, oven in
tlio roughest kind of weatlier. Four
times tlio schooner was oil' l'oint Keyes
attempting to got into port, but tho
strong southerly and southeasterly
gules drove her back to the latitudo of
Humboldt ouch timo.
Although tho elements wore gallantly
fought and conquered, another enemy

low, and several dnys ago tho Col man
passed, nnd when sho was spoken the
sailors woro almost starving. They

Tho Herald, in tlio issue of the 4th
inst., commenting on the fish story from
Iowa, says : "And mo3t singular of all,
this wonderful story would lead people
to believe (if thoy had no moro sense)
that tho aforesaid pike was one of tlio
survivors of the Johnstown flood, etc."
The writer of tiiat unintelligent item, in
the simplicity of his mental endow
ments, is evidently, of tho opinion that
tlio person who entertains !he idea that
a fish must of necessity be drowned by
reason of a freshet or the flooding of a
valley, is gifted witli a true sense of the
situation. According to the theory ad
vanced by this sapient scribe, it is im
possible for a powerful and voracious
fish, like tho pike, to swim down ono
river and up another, or to swallow n
pocket book. A shark, twenty-five feet
in length, was caught in St. Helena, and,
on opening him, the discovery was
made that ho had devoured a soldier
who was drowned. In snapping off
members of the body, ho had swallowed
them; clothes, uniform and leather
were all found in the stomach of the
monster. There is something highly
ridiculous in speaking of a fish as "one
of the survivors of the horrible Johns
town flood." Of course, if the fish had
gone ashore, he would not have been
n "survivor."
Another item adjoining the above,
BpeakB of "rustic, known elsewhere as
weather-boarding." That may bo true
of somo localities ;but in California, all
weather-boards made out of redwood
wero thick on one end and thin on the
other; being about six or eight inches
wide, and totally distinct from the
boards called "rustic." We are all in
need of items containing reliable in
formation; but, the avorage gymnast
who vaults into tho editorial chair,
should pause, ponder and weigh well
the merit of Ins productions, then wo
may be treated to literary dishes that
ato less fishy but more logical.

The Coquillo Herald gives an account
of tho flood on the river as follows :
'Trice's shingle mill floated up and
settled off its former position at one
ond. It is nearly full of mud too. Mr.
Moulton's house was invudod nnd much
of the contents destioyed, nnd likewise
Frank Collier's and J. L. Uoy's, tho
latter houso settling badly at one corn
er. Mrs. . Matilda Willard's houses,
new and old, nnd her barn were carried
back into tho marsh. Ottie Williard's
residonce also got a move on itself.
J. 0. Laird's fine residence kept its
place, but was badly injured inside.
Win. Norris' houso was carried away
somo distance. Other small dwellings
up tlio river were carried away. That
of old man Newpomor at Norway waB due
moro to tho wind than, the flood. Down
the river from lioro it was worse. The
Hillard place was swept clean. The
houso occupied by Y. M. Lowo was car
ried to tlio lower end of the farm, and
tho barn lodged against tlio tall treos
just nbovo tho Flanagan residence op
posite tho mouth of Beaver slough. Mr.
Lowo had put his furniture on the hay
in the barn and was afraid to at
tompt to get it out. Tho barn contained
nbout thirty tons of liny. The Flana
gan place was stripped of ovory build
ing. S. W. Gilmau lost all his build
ings and their contents. Ho had just
got his family and stock out to the hills
when nil wont. All the buildings on tho
rivor bottom nbout Iown slough are
down or gone. At Coaledo tho water
was up in several houses, nnd carried
nwny tlio warehouse. ThedamngotoJ.F.
Dunham's railroad, loggiu" roads, land
ings, etc., cannot bo repaired for less
than 5000. Tho loss at Myrtlo l'oint was
alight, mostly being, lumber floated from
Edwards & Dalmns' mill. At Parkers
burg considerable damage was done to
wharves, etc'
The value of tho shipments made from
the Sluslnw for tho yoar ending July 1st,
1880, woro ns follows: Salmon, (10,000
cases,)' 184,000; llvo stock, if 100,000;

By way of opening a new paragraph
wo would liko to call attention to the
fact that early last fall while we wero
lazily basking in tho haze of a warm
and mellow Indian summer, our mutual
friend Johnny Uaglund, warned us
many and ofttimes, and insisted "that
it was going to be a hard winter." His
prophecy has enmo truo, and the resi
dents of several of our once promising
streams will join me in saying our name
is "Mud."

As I was saying, these are hard times
and a man is filled with dejected spirits,

when John had the grippe, you could
not even give him a cross look without

Bologna Sausage and Condensed Lager

Roseburg shipped round to San Fran
cisco, and all future Eastern and Cali
fornia mail ordered to San Francisco,
and thence to this point by one of our
steamers. This is intendod to include
all mail that has heretofore came over
