According to tho Portland papers, tho immigrants now arriving thero bring with them considerable money. Somo of thoso with money could do well by coming this way, for thcro aro good op portunities hero for good mon with moans; but poor immigrants had bettor givo this placo tho go-by just now, for wo already' havo enough poor peoplo and moro laborers than there is a do mand for. Tho nvorngo wages paid log gers this yoar aro only about $40 per month, nnd mill hands uru working for less this year than they did last. But mon who havo monoy to Invest can in vest it hero to advantngo in many ways, and especially in good ranches, improv ed and unimprovod ; but it takes monoy to buy nu improved place nnd monoy and muselo to improve 0110, Adam Pcrslibakorof Randolph was in town tills week. Ho says thnt now saw mill ontorpriso of his about which so many items havo boou published lately is a fixed fact and that tho mill will in ull probability cut lumber before Christ mas; but tho Work of construction is 1 M M m imtm not being rushed rapidly, ns thcro is no urgent demnnd for It nt present. Tho mill-site is opposite Machndo'8 fishery, nearly midway between Randolph and Bandon, on land owned by Porshhakor nnd wlicro ho has good and oxtenstvo boom facilities and an abundant and convenient supply of fresh water. Tho work In hand now is preparing tho foundation timbers that are to bo laid upon plica yet to be driven. Work upon tho framo of tho mill will not begin until in July, When completed the mill will havo a capacity for cutting about 12,000 feet por day, but tho mill will bo constructed with a viow to doub ling its capacity whenover- the demand for lumber will warrant it. A gentleman who lately pasisod over tho new road that Supervisor Dimmick is rapidly completing, toconnectMarsh flcld with Coqulllc City, reports the work as being well done. This is as it should bd, for a good road will greatly facilitate trade between tho bay nnd tho river. The farmers of the Coquillo need a road to the bay by which they can come o or In ft day with n load of produce, market it, do such trading as they want to do, nnd return homo the second day thus avoiding the delays and necessarily exorbitant ex pcnf.es in cident to getting from tho river to this placo by the present portage with such articles as they have to sell. And witli a great reduction of tho expenses of get ting to another market, and tho doub ling of their facilities for buying and selling, tho Coquillo farmers will find themselves so much benefited by tho new road that their end of it will be kept in good repair, while the business men of the bay will not pursuo such a suicidal course as to lose that trade by allowing this end of the road to retro grade after it has once been opened in good shapo. Supervisor Dimmick is of tho opinion that this year's taxes will not bo sufficient to put o'ur end of the road in as perfect condition as tho trade that it is expected to accommodate will warrant, and if such bo the cobo it would redound lo tho credit and tommercial advantages of this placo If our business men would second Dimmick's efforts to open the road as it should be opened by paying a portion if not all of their nextyoar's taxes for tho work. They would, without doubt, gain by advanc ing the money if it bo needed. Tho opening of this new highway Is a worthy enterptise, and nil who contribute toward it will only perform a duty that they owo to themselves and which will be duly appreciated by tho supervisor and tho community at large. A quiet wedding came off in this place last evening at tho residence of the bride's parents, tho contracting parties being Mr. M. I. Pondergrass and Mrs. A. E. Forslund, Rev. Irad Richardson of Empire officiating. Tho bride's mother is absent on a visit to friends at San Francisco, and tho ceremouy was performed in tho presence of tho father and brother and a few of tho most inti mate friends of tho bride nnd groom, nmong whom wero Dr. C. W. Toner nnd wife, Thomas Hirst nnd wife, Mrs. Capt. Hill of North Bend, John Church and wifo, F. Mark and wife, Miss Mary McLcod, Miss Annio Webber, Miss Helen Green and R. F. Bowron. The brido wore a rose-tinted silk, draped with laco, which was very becoming to her, nnd tho only ornaments worn wero natural roses. Tho groom was dressed in nn elegant suit of black broadcloth, with white vest and white kid gloves, nnd looked well and huppy. After tho ceremony, the party drank champagne to the health of tho happy couple and then repaired to a sumptu ous lunch prepared for tho occasion. Tho bndo's cako was handsomely Je corated with forget-me-nots and tho groom's cake with whito roses nnd sil ver trimmings. Tho presents to the brido wero many, all appropriate and some very elegant. Tho real estate transactions recorded at Empire show a transfer by Geo. W. Bealo to Horatio and C. D. McFarlin of 55) acres of land on North slough. It is said tho McFarlins purchased this for tho purpose of raising cranberries on it, nnd thatC. D. McFarlin, who depart ed by tho last Areata, went below with tlio expectation of soon returning and preparing the land for tho business for which it was purchased. Coos county could raise cranberries enough to sup ply tho world, and not half try. Several months ago W. G. Webster put a lot of wood-butchers at work on ins building adjoining our of fice, and while tlie aforesaid butchers were banging and whanging around Webster's place it often seemed to us that thoy wero trying to tear ours down, and ever since their departure we havo felt very much inclined to bring an ac tion against Webster for damages, for he has utterly failed to replace divers and sundry things that his men took down and that he repeatedly promised to put up. But, in going after Webster, we arc getting away from the coons. Webster's house, or Ilnnscn'B Exchange saloon, stands too close to our office, and In improving Webster's premises bis carpenters evidently took boards from our house and didn't fence against coons, for as soon as the carpenters quieted down around Webster's house tho coons moved into and took posses sion of our garret, and they bold the fort till yet. Tho two houses appear to stand just near enough to each other to enable the coon to place his paws on one and his back against the other, and in this way ho goes up and down at will, day and night, from our garret to the mud-flats under the wharves along Front street sometimes a-lisliing after clams, in tlie daytime, when the tido is out, and again after chickens at night, when he don't care a continental cuss whether the tido be high or low. This business went on all winter, and wo didn't care, for Crawford &. Lockhart inhabited the front part of the building at that time, and tho coons stayed with them, and it was a happy family, until the ceiling over Crawford's table sprung a leak ono night, when he and somo of his legal papers got wet. Ho didn't swear much, nor very loud, but vengeanco took pos session of his soul and the next day he wont after the coons red-eyed, drove them from their Quarters over his office, and fenced up tho place whoro they came in, after which peaco nnd quiet ness prevailed while Crawford & Lock hart remained our neighbors. Tho coons had acted naughty with Crawford and ho was mad, and they knew it; but af ter awhile tho lawyers moved out and then the coons moved in acain and lo cated over our part ot tho premises, In a cornor near tlie press, where there ap pears to have been an immense increase in tho family a few days ago. When tho mother first returns from ono of her foraging expeditions, tho uproar in the family indicates that thcro aro a dozen or moro ot them, and tho chirping and squealing of ono little follow, who seems to always get left and crowded out, sound as if ho would make mince meat of tho others iu short order were ho only big enough to do it. When the press first starts there is profound silence in tho coon family for a few minutes, but they soon become accustomed to the noise and go ahead with their music just as if they wero cosily quartered in an old hollow tree. Yesterday tho devil il undertook to raid tho don, but when ho put iu an appearance tho coons kept bo still thnt ho said ho couldn't find them ; but thoy aro there, all the samo, and chattered loudly and merrily at him in less than a minuto after ho left tlie loft. Wo suspect tho boy felt friend ly to tho little ones, but ho hadn't lost any old coons and did not fool anxious to engage iu a controversy nnd combat with tho mother. If some entorpnsing urchin wants to go coon hunting ho cun find a hot trail by applying at this office to-day. Lator particulars of tlio capsizing of tho ship Earl of D.ilhousio at San Fran cisco say sho was in tow of the tug Alert, which was towing ahead, tho ship's yards being down. Tho wind was blowing Btrong enough on tho bay to mako it difficult to handlo a loaded ship. Tlio Drtlhousio had hardly clearod her anchorage ground when tho accident occurred, tho spot whoro sho sunk be ing a littlo to tho southward of Mission rock. The vessel lies In shallow wator nt low tido. It is not definitely known whether she was Insured or not, but it is probable sho carried a harbor risk ; but whether or no that was vitiatod by tho action of tho captain is a mooted question among underwriters, tho prevailing opinion being that tlio Insurance com panies aro exempt. In 1803 J. B. Torbott of Upson county, Ga living near "the rock," burled $1,- 500 in silver on his placo. It was placed in a meal sack and buried doop. The war over, ho resumed his plow, and for 22yeu.rs ho passed and repassed tho place where the hidden treasure lay. Tho locality Was marked undue could havo secured it at nny timo. A day or so ago, having-use for thnt amount of money, Torbott took n friend along with him nnd repaired to tho spot. Whllo thoy know tho exact location, it required nearly half a day to dig it up. When the treasure was reached thero was not a thread left of tho meal sack. It had vanished. Tho money, however, was thcro, though somo of tho coins had sunk to tho depth of four feet from tho main pile. It is possible that there was quicksand in tho near vicinity, and tlio weight of tho coins carried them down. Circuit Court Calendar.
