What Hm! "Chronicle" Hat to Say of Its Yffitkit In Washington Territory. 8AiFrtAcnico, Dec. 7. Tho rcsulta of woman snlTrnEO in Washington terri tory are discussed editorially In tlio Ghroalclo this morning, ns follows: "Tho mnnicipal oloction at Sonttlo took place in Juno, and women turned out and worked with a will, organising their canvass with tho skill of veteran poli ticians. Tho consequence was, they elected a majority of tho city council, and all of tho city officers except mayor, i Thcf consequence of this was that gam bling was entirely suppressed, tho num ber of drunken men largely reduced, all business houses closed on Sunday, and n respectable policcforco wasnppolnted. Flushed with this victory, tho women embarked in tho fall campaign with a vigor. They attempted unsuccessfully to capture, first tho republican, and then tho democratic convention. Foiled in these ondeavors, they got up nn amalgam ticket of men nominated by (lie two parties, and" when election day camo they worked with nn oncrgy which would have astonished Chris. Buckley. Crowds of petti-coated strikers swarmed tho polls, and a committee of resolute fe males hunted up all stay-at-home house keepers and servants and drove them in carriages to tho voting places. The re sult waB that they swept the field. The amalgam ticket was overwhelmingly suc cessful, and the men they opposed were snowed under. The victory was so com plete that it is now said men are asham ed to walk the streets of Rattle with out female escort. "Tho result shows two orthreo things first, it demonstrates that women wilL take a hand in politics if they get a chance ; next, that their influence will bo exerted on the side of law and order. But tho fact that the ladies of Seattle moke their headquarters at the "Wom en's Christian Temperance union-, -and that their first act when they got power 1 was to compel the closing of all stores on Sunday, shows that tho fair sex, at least in Washington territory, have something jet to learn in political sci ence. It indicates that if suflrace was granted to all tho women in the United States, those doctrines which are recog nized as isms would run some chance of being incorporated in the legislation of the country. In tho course of time, perhaps, the ladies would learn that there is a limit to the just interference of governments with personal liberty, andihat it is not always wise to try to make men virtuous by law. But mean whilo, as the old Dutchman said when he noticed that Americans never har ness their wives to the pldw, aa they do in some parts of the fatherland, tho female suffragists might-make this coun try uncomfortably warm for; men and horses. 1 weeks thoy got no refreshing draught; pressed great Interest, and instead of only such ns Is thrown upon tho ground , leaving next morning sho nnnounccd from tho kitchen a scanty supply. Water is an element abounding mOro largely upon tho earth than any other the atmosphere surrounding the earth alone excepted. This element, water, is aljsoutely necessary for sustaining all forms of life. Without it the animal and vegetable kingdoms would soon' perish from olTthe face of the earth and the earth itself "become baked into a nolid mass a huge bdrnt Vrtcfc. Working in harness in the hot sun, or standing in a shadeless pasture flold, tho pores of (lie skin are wide open, and from every pore issues a stream of water, which soon depletes tho body of its normal amount of mois ture. This waste should bo supplied more frequently than is generally done. And that supply should bo pure water, buku aa win queucn tnirst and give tone and vigor to the whole system, .making rich blood corpuscles, aidlhj; ingestion. and furnish tho oxygon bo indispensa bly necessary. Stagnant wator, thick withanimalculae, germs and spores pf disease, should bo carefully avoided. Animals may appear to relish it, bo causo there may be something in the savor agreeable to the palate, it is nev ertheless an unwholesome drink and in time will sliow evil results. An idea prevails with somo people-, and wo aro sorry the number is larger than it should be that sheep apd fowls need very little water, and acting upon this theory littlo concern is shown whether they get any at all. No theory waB over more false. Aa stated in the outset of this nrtlcle, there is not a liv ing creature, however low in tho order of creation, that does not need water, and that will not use it if access thereto can ba had. David Morris, hailing from Cheney, W. T., committed suicido at the Burton houso last evening by taking morphine. Ho arrived, hero Friday evening, and yesterday h6 said ho was going to Seat tle to sell two lots he owned there. Ho fell in with E. Hagan of Powder riycr valley, who was stopping nt tho Burton houso, and who told him that property was low in Scnttlo, and advised him not to soy, at present. He said ho had to sell in order to savo his claim at Che ney. Hagan was familiar with the country around Cheney, and knew the claim Morris said he owned. Morris finally persuaded Hagan to buy his lots in Seattlo for $100, and tho deed was made and tho money paid ovor yester day afternoon. Hagan then telegraph ed to the auditor of Seattle and ascer tained that Morris had sold the lots somo time ago. He taxed Morris with tho cheat, who at once paid him back $90 of tho money, and said ho would pawn his clothing to raise tho other $10. Ho said he had been on a spree for a week and this was the first mean trick he Iliad over done. About C o'clock Morris went into the wash-room at the Burton honsc to get a drink, accompanied by Hagan. He took a small vial from his pocket and asked Hagan for his knife to remove tho cork. The latter asked Morris what ho had in the vial, if it was strych nine. Ho said it was cream of tartar and ho wanted to tako some for Ins stomach. He took about a teaspoonfnl and returned to his scat in the office. A few minutes after he went into the wash-room again and Hagan looking in saw him tipping up the vial, and taking the remainder of the contents. Morris then went back to his seat in the offico and shortly fell into a stupor. Those sitting around thought ho was playing "possum," and that he intended to slip out when unobserved and go away with out paying Hagan the remaining $10. Morris sat there till about 9:30 in a stupefied condition, when thoso in the room became alarmed and sent for Dr. Wheeler.. Every effort was made to re store tho unfortunato man to conscious ness, but without avail, and about 10 o'clock he died. The coroner was noti fied and took charge of tho remains. Morris was apparently about CO years of age. bhortlv after taking tho poison hesaid to Hagan: "If I 'go up, write to my wife at Seattle." Ho was poorly clad and evidently out of funds, which probably led him to sell tho lots which he1 had already disposed Of. ".Tho most severe wind storm of tho year has pre vailed sincoS o'clock jesterday nf tor noon, and though somo what abated nt 10 o'clock to-night it is still blowing fur iously. Tho city was turned topsy tur- vyiasmignt. ituiulreuwf signs wore blown down, tho tin roofing of sovornl buildings was torn ofT, and many win dows and fences wrecked. Nobody was seriously hurt, nnd tho damage is so scattering and divided that it may bo set down ns nothing, Tho storm, fol lowing n long dry season, found tho streets very dusty,, nnd the effect can bo easily imagined by thoso who hao wit nessed similar tempests here. Tho air has been filled with flying refuse, vary ing in s'wo from a cobblestone to a grain of sand, and it has almost been worth ono's life to venture forth. In tho west ern part of tho city sand completely buried tho street railways, and traffic on GoaTy, California, Union nnd other Btrects has been vexatiously interrupted. In tho uiiddlo of town dust has been fly ing liko snow, and this, with the pierc ing cold, has made the dav one of in tense discomfort. On tho Lay tho storm raged fiercely, and the damage has been considerable. The only disaster was the sinking of a boat belonging to tho telegraph com pany, used in laying cables. It ventu red ont- to re pair n break betw een Oak land and Goat island this morning and was swamped, directly in tho track of tho Oakland ferries. Its masts riso above the water, and when tho stoi m subsides it can easily be raised. All tho ships in the harbor have been drag ging their anchors all day, and ttijia invo been busily engaged in kceninsr them oil the shore. Thirteen vessels in all drifted on tho Hats, but ail have been gotten safely off. The only serious case was that of the British ship OTrlen, which got foul of old piles just below Meigs' wharf, and tho captain had to pay ifoOOO to be pulled into snfo water. Another account says this was the most violent storm ever experienced at San Francisco. Passengers on tho ferry-boats were seasick. Tno sections of the seawall wero smashed in, nnd tho breakwater at the foot of Green street . was completely washed away. Iteports from the interior show that a cold wind storm prevailed generally throughout the state. At Hanford In the San Joaquin vnlley there was a light fall of snow, and at Bakersfiold, further south, three inches of snow fell. Tina is unprecedented in that section of tho state. stsirCAI.I, ANl) 8F.F, FOlt YOUHSKLF. Wo nro Belling CLOTHING AT GUKATIA UKDUCKD HAT KM.
