A Dwelling House Destroyed by Fire.
Charley Hickman's house at tils D.inlets creek
much was dcstrocd by fire About noon on the
13th Inst. Tho firo Is supposed to have origina
ted tiy spark from the tove-plpo lodging in
and Igniting -the mots lhat had accumulated
and dried on the roof. Mr. Dlckman wat pre
paring dinner at the time the discovered the fire
and sounded the alarm, and Nathan Smith and
Rev. J. G. Mosher were ttie first to hear the
alarm and respond la It. Dlckman wa at work
nearly a mile from the house when tie discovered
tho flames and rushed to the scene. Some few
things were saved from tho house, but some of
these caught fire and were consumed after they
had been carried out, and hardly anything worth
mentioning was saved. After running from his
work to the house, and in attempting to save
some of it contents, Dkkmnn wa overcome by
the heat and fell helpless to near the house that
lie was only saved from death by being dragged
by Smith to a place of safety. Mother also be
came asphyxiated and was rescued by Smith.
Tho milk house took fire nnd was burned, and a
vest, in one of the pockets of which wa a $xi
greenback, burned after it had been carried
from the house. Fortunately for Dlckman, the
house on hit lower ranch wat vacant nt the
time of the fire, and Into this ho moved for the
present. Hit lost by the fire amounts to several
hundred dollirt and the inconvenience that It
occasions him at this busy season of the year is
no trifling consideration.

In acordance with Instructions received from
Washington, United State District Attorney
Watson hat commenced suit against the I'ort
bind lumbering company to recover $5635.
Tho facts upon which the suit Is based are as
follows: Edward Rorllnc, of Frccport, W. T
filed a declaratory statement on the southeast
quarter of a certain section of government land
November 13, 1881, and relinquished his cLiim
to the said quarter section Octolicr aa, 168a.
From this piece of land 800,000 feet of logs were
cut and sold to the I'orttand lumbering compa
ny. As Rorllne is not responsible, financially, it
wat deemed best to hold the lumbering corn
tony responsible for the value of the timber. In
the compUlnt it is alleged that Dorllne filed the
declaratory statement simply for the purpose of
defrauding the government out of the timber on
the land. Suit Is therefore brought to recover
the value at the rate of $6 50 per thousand feet
