An exchange gives tlio following account of n conflict between n white tnnn anil a Chinaman employ ed on the narrow gnugc ro.-td near Wnodburii : For potnc days the Chinamen linvc lcen very impudent nnd tried to run things their own way. When fresh water would he brought they would crowd around the buckets anil swill it out like pigs, not allowing the white men to get near it until it was too filthy to chink. During the afternoon of Monday n French man went to the bucket to get a drink, when one of the Chinamen knocked him down. Frenchman like .ho jumped up and knocked twj Chinamen clear oft" the grade. In a short time a spike driver named Kd. Searles, went to the bucket to get a drink, when about lf China men started alter him with picks, shovels, boulders, etc., chasing him back to the track. He seized a spike hammer and warned them to keep hack, but they krpt coming for liim. As soon as one came in reach he let drive, sending mm to grass in a heap. The next one that made a jump for him got a whack on the back of the head which crushed his skull, felling him to the: ore and located mines in the princi ground like a wounded ox. Fortunate for them tliat he escaped, for had they killed or criplcd him, the whole neighbor hood on the prairie would have arose in a body and swept them from the face of the earth, killing every last one of them. Tlio Chinamen were highly indignant at the engineer, made divers threats against him as well as the boss, who ordered the train (o move. The Chinaman who was struck on the head by Searles was carried to ramp, where he died at 11 o'clock the next night. His bodv is now in the city, and efforts are being made by the Chinese to have Searles arrested for murder. Searles gave himself up to the au thorities, but an investigation of the j case showing that he had only acted in self-defence, he was released Fearing that the Chinese would kill him should he return, he has thrown up his job and gone away. .loHlt nilllnKN I'hlloHophj. i i..... ,. ,.i.:nni..i...n .. ..,.. . a iiui jij u"ji:i tiaiiiiu iu it 111.111 i i- j Iin' lilf li'ttc in in mirlrlln m t T ctitill I iillwufs insist upon his finishing up the job bi wearing a short gown and pettikoat. j Tlnire 7. sutch a thing az too much i energy.
