The New York "Timos" gives the
following iloHcription of mi imtnence
ntunmor (hat is bvincoiiHlriictcd for
tlio Now York and Liverpool trade:
A now ctuntnnliip, which when
omj.lo.cil will ho the largest and
finest morchnnl vessel in the world,
is now being built at Harrow, Kng.,
for the Intniin line, She will be
ready for use in the spring of 1SS1,
and will then begin to make regular
trips between this port and Liver
pool. The City of Koine was regard
ed as tho niobt appropriate name
which could bo given to this addi
tion to tho Imnan fleet. Her di
mensions arc as follows : Length of
kcel,f00 feet; length over nil, 516
feel; breadth of beam, 52 feet;
depth of hold. J5S feet, 9 inches ; and
depth from top to deck houses to
keel, 52 feet. Iter measurement will
hoSUOOtons, or over 2000 tons larger
Ihnn either the City of Herlin or the
Arizona, and S00 tons larger than
thServia, the new Cunard steam
chip, which will be completed this
fall. She will be over four-fifths of
tbosiro of the G rent Eastern. The
engines of tho City of Home will be
of SoOO-horso power, with six cylin-1 interesting analogy bctxxeen the le

be eight boilers, heated by -IS fur
nnces, and the vessel can be propell
ed nttho rate of 1SJ knots an hour.
She will carry four masts and three
smoke funnels. A large spread of
canvas can be set, which will enable
the steamship to make good time if
necessary, without the aid of the en
gines. The saloon and staterooms
will bo placed amidships, and will'
contain every facility forcomfortand
luxurj'. All the latest improve-
ments are tobeaddcd,and the entire
cabin will bo splendidly furnished
and upholstered. There will be 275
revolving chairs at the saloon tables,
and the staterooms will easily ac
commodate 800 first-class passen
gors. A drawing-room, which can

room will be above the dra wing-room,
nnd will accommodate 100 smokers
at once. Tho saloon will contain
six bath-rooms. There will be on
board for almost any number of
steerage passengers, and space for an
enormous quantity of freight in the
bold. The City of Home is to be
built of steel, with a double bottom,
and eleven bulk-heads. The long
itudinal bulk-heads are to be run
through tho engines' and boilers'
space. These will greatly decrease
the danger of the vessel sinking, in
case of a collision. The top decks
are to be of the best teak. Xo ex
pense is to be spared in making this
magnificent steamship jwrfect in
every respect. Phe will have the
highest classification of any vessel in
the Liverpool Red-book and in the
British Lloyds. The Imnan people
expect that, so far as the transporta
tion of jiasscngors and freight goes,
tho City of Roino will prove the
monarch of the seas. "Work was be
gun on the new vessel as soon as the
contract with the Iiarrow .Steam
ship Suilding Company had been
closed.
