SPORTS NEWS Pointers Sweep Talent, Rogue River Contests Central Point junior high ball players added victories three and four to their record this year by dropping Talent 30-26 last Thursday and Rogue River 41-14 Tuesday afternoon. In the Talent game^ played at Talent, the locals jumped into a lead and held the host squad sdorele.ts for the first stanza. Regulars plaved three quarters of the game. Wavne Allen was high point man with 14 followed by Paul Beach with 13. Ronnie Wel- burn hit 16 for Talent. Quarter scores were: Central Point 9 27 35 39 Talent 0 11 15 2« The seventh grade JV squad edged bv their Talent counter parts 15-13 after coming from behind in the final quarter. Pfaff led scoring with six points and Talent’s Jacobs hit 7. Quarter scores were: Central Point JV 4 6 fi 15 Talent JV 2 2 13 13 Tuesday afternoon on the home floor, the Pointers over-powered Hogue River 41-14. The local squad pasted an early lead and swept to a commanding lead. Jerome McQuade posted 11 counters and Wavne Allen dunk ed 9 for Central Point with Shaw of Rogue River hitting five. The Grants Pass contest has been slated for Monday. The Pointers will take on the Medford crew at 6:45 p m Thurs- dav, January 20. Coach Riggs predicted that his team will have their hands full with the two teams. Dep. Coroners Named By Morris for County Carlos W. Morris, county cor oner of Jackson county, announc ed today the appointment of Charles G. Dorrell and Joseph R Hosick as deputy coroners for Medford and the northern end of t e county. Gordon C. Hays, manager of the Conger-Morris Ashland mort uary, was named deputy coroner for the southern end of Jackson county. SKATING PARTY The Girls League of Crater High school will sponsor an all- sc mol skating party Monday evt ning at Grants Pass. Money earned by the event will be used by the league for school projects. League Play Opens Against Eagle Point Crater will open Rogue League play tomorrow evening, Friday, on the local floor against Eagle Point, touted the team to beat in the league. The following night, Saturday, the Comets will travel to Eagle Point for a re .urn game on the Eagle's home court. The home »- me will begin at 8:15 with the j V preliminary scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Crater Squeaks Chieftains 64-57 Crater Comets brought their pre-conference record up to four wins and four losses Tuesday night as they edged past a fired up Rogue River team 64-57 in the final period. Vern Parent helped turn the tide for Crater in the final quart er as he dunked four field goals in a row to put the Comets in front 54-50. Halfway through the last stanaz, the Comets had post ed a 60-55 lead. -. The Chieftains were hot as they hit from all angles on the (floor. The Rogue River squad led at the half and at the third quarter mark. Fred Hogue took scoring hon ors for the Comets with 23 points. Tex Standfield of Rogue River topped his team with 20 points. Faber, Charles Meyer, Kenneth Beebe and Bill Anhorn motored to Eugene Tuesday night where they attended the ball game played between Wash ington State and U of O. They returned home late Tuesday. Funds from the dance will be used for school paper expenses. Morris^ managing partner, and Mrs. Mabel C. Cong er, of Conger-Morris funeral parlors, Medford, announced to day the purchase of the Seventh Day Advenitst church and ad- joing property at Fourth and ‘C” streets, Ashland, for the purpose of opening a branch mortuary. The adjoining property will be used for modernization and ex pansion. Assistant manager Gordon C. Hays, who has been with Cong er-Morris for the past six and one-half years, will be manager of the Ashland mortuary.
