ARTHUR EDWARD POWELL Editor and Proprietor The 53-year-old colonel has photo graphed the valley and Its people from one end to the other—he has taken a bunch of war correspondents over the place to let their mouths water at the thoughts of exploring the isolated and mysterious place. Why can't they be satisfied with their aerial exploration and call it a day live and let live? Oh No— Col. Ray T. Elainore, who has made such a wonderful record In the fight for freedom and peace, haB the de sire and Intends to Invade the peace ful valley. He not only wants to go In with a glider, but take along en ough tools and material to make a landing strip so transport planes can come In later, How much different is—what he wants to do, anil what he has been fighting against? That is all Hitler wanted to do wan to take over other countries with tile glider apd transport planes, (And a few machine guns to bargain with.) I wonder how Col Elaniore would like It, or what he would say if 1 stuck a bunch of 5 & 10 Jewelry 111 my pocket, strapped a couple of six- guns to my side and called at h's home in Menlo Park, California, with the purpose In mind to see what kind of people they were and to bargain with my 5 & lOths. (To Be Continued) South America As Seen by Local Lady Mrs. Mildred Swain la writing to her mother, Mrs. E. E. Scott, from South America, where she is with her huslmnd, who is employed by the government rubber research. Continued from last week Arrived at Rio airport at 2:00 I’.M. and the last half hour I had to talk a blue streak to the little Brazilian girl to keep her from getting airsick when we started to descend. I conse quently didn't get to see Rio from the air when we catne in but had seen it on the previous trip and was I glad I could divert the girl’s atten« tion to something besides her stom ach. Mabel and I spent the first part of our stay at the lovely Gloria Hotel and enjoyed it very much. Had our selves made beautiful at the Casa Doret beauty shop in Rio and were all set. Tiie view from the Hotel is beautiful ami overlooks the bay. Sugar Ixtaf and also the lights of Rio at night from the roof. It is alto gether lovely. We were entertained by some friends front the American Embassy, friends at RIX? and several others whom we knetv, including a man from Price, Waterhouse com- pany (auditors who has visited us here in Manaos. We were invited by the Coordinator of Inter-American Affairs offices to attend their special showing of "Fighting Lady,” the highly public ized movie put on the Navy, at the new and modern A.B.I, building "Associate Brasilelro 1 m p r e n s a,” meaning, in engllsh "Brazilian Press Association.") I understand it has now been released in the U.S.A, and if you have a chance be sure to see it. Mabel and I took in some wonder ful movies while in Rio which was a real treat clnce the ones here are at least two years old and usually four to six years old. The new theatres of Rio are as lovely as any I've seen at home and are air-conditioned. We went beach bathing at Copocabana Beach and got a nice sunburn, of course spent one week end at the Arute home and had a wonderful time. Bunny. Mrs. Arute (wife of the head accountant for RDC at Rio), took us to the famous golf ciub at Guve.i which Is situated in the hills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean The Golden Link class will hold their class part at the Scott home this Friday at 2 p.nt.
