Bates, and two Brazll- Ians who were murdered by Indian» of the Atroarls Tribe in the vicinity of the town of Mauro, Amazonas. which 1» situated on the Rio Negro near the Junction of the Rio Branco, num» 20<l miles from Manaos. Tne tragedy occurred many miles above the town on the Alalau’ River ’ which flows from the Jauapere' 1 River, possibly between 100 and 15u miles above tin» town of Mauro. ■ On Oct. 22nd a weary, near-dead- thnn-allve Brazilinn staggered back into the town of Mauro and his wtory was telegrnphed into Manaos via Nactionnl Telegraph telling of the deaths of the other four men in the expedition party which had »et out from Manaos some six weeks pr-sv- icualy in the interests of the UA. Of the five people in the expedition he. alone, escaped from the hostile tribe of Indians who had killed the other members of the party and had made his way through the Jungles back to Mauro to tell the story, arriving there some seventeen day, later.
