— Notice has been received from the post office department that several thousand parcels are being received each week at the post office at New- York City for shipment to eervl-.e men cvereas, which are in torn and damaged condition due to improper packing and wrapping, This neces- ■itates the assignment of a large number of employees to the sole task of assembling articles loose in the trails and endeavoring to asso- elate them with their respective par- cels. The containers of the broken parcels are usually of thin cardboard, for over- generally a shoe box. Boxes . seas shipment should be stronger than containers used for parcels which do not leave our shores. Ow- Ing tj the storage they must under- go, It io absolutely necessary that all article* for overseas be packed either In boxes of metal, wood, solid fiber board. or strong double-faced cor- j rugate,! fiberboard. Each box should ! be «ecurely sealed with strong gum- I med paper tape or tied with strong I twine, or both, and should contain sufficient cushioning material to pre vent any rattling or loosening of the articles within the parcel. Thus- parcels which are sealed must have a parcel post Indicia showing that they may be opened for postal inspection if necessary. No doubt this Improper packing of these parcels account for a grea". deal of the complaints of loss. Nearly every day we have to inform someone that it will be ne cessary for them to pack a parcel, intended for overseas shipment, In a stronger container. Sometimes we wonder If some of these patrons have any conception of the handling and storage these parcels must undergo before they reach their destinations as they are often presented in flimsy containers and sometimes not even wrapped and many are tied with common binding twine. The new issue of motor vehicle tax stumps due to be placed on all motor vehicles on July 1, 19*4 will be placed on sale at the post office on June 10, 194*. U. She had been transferred to San Francisco, Cal., and assigned to the Marine Corps Depot of Supplies as a clerk-typist. Private McCord’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Andrew McCord, live in Medford. and tetchers of West Side School en joyed a picnic at Lithia Park. After rambling through the park enjoying the flowers, animals and play ap- paratus. they sat down to a delicious picnic lunch spread on a long table, During the luncheon hour tlio eighth grade graduates entertained with their class history, by Martin Grubb, Eugene Smith and Richard Leever; the class will, by Donna Lee Ross; the class prohecy by Mary Hndere.' and the Cla-sB Farewell by Beth MiCurley. Thomas Bates, 95, Dies in Medford BABY BOY BORN- Born to Mr. and Mrs. Paul Murphy at Portland hospital Saturday 10:15 A.M., a baby son weighing « lb. 10 oz. The young man is named Michial Marin» Murphy. His father is In the navy and was home on leave a couple of weeks ago but has no idea when he will see his new son. Mr. and Mrs. T. A. Marine of Central Point are great grandparents of the young man and Mr. and Mrs. James Mur phy c.’ Central Point and Mr. and Mrs. George Marine of Portland are grandparents. J. Thomas Bates, one of the Med- ford'.; oldest citizens both in age and years of residence, passed away Sun day evening ot the age of 95. M Bates lias enjoyed excellent health all his life and was ill but a »hort tin e before his passing. Mr. Bates came with hi« family in 1892 to Medford and has resided here since that time.
