THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1* IMI rwj>T I «ive all the money they can to use in the work of the fish conservation or game life and so far their work has been very good. Sport Gags By K. D. P. My humblest apologies are <‘X- tended to the state game commission when I roasted them last week re- garding the method of using the game birds that they raised, to test the hunting qualities of the bird dogs. You see I did not hear the true story till Jim Ross told me last Friday, He stated that it was a company that raised the private birds for that purpose. So that left the commission in much better light but I suppose that I should have roasted them some more for allow ing such things as that kind of bir<l dog field tests to cruelly slaught >r game birds. —0---- I am greatly handicaped in one way because of my hearing, which Is the biggeat reason why I have nevei been able to attend many of the big happenings around here in th.* valley. If I had been possessed of good hearing, I would have been at the sportsmen’s meeting last Thurs- day and really stated what I think of the club room as recommended by some men here. -4- To have a club room for our aportamen's club is very tine thing to have but to me it is a bigger mls- take to have one now with one of the smallest membership rolls we have had since the club’s foundation. The idea of having a club room with only 25 members and sometimes at a meeting there would only be eight or ten members attending. —•— What I do not like is the cost of the club room. The rent is $4.00 per month and $1.00 for lights and wood which is plenty cheap. But when you add that up for the year, the cost is $60 per year. Well, that $60 might be needed a great deal for other work in the conservation of the game life or fish work. Look at the Rogue River Sports men’s club. They have a far larger membership than our club has. yet do they have a club room? No. They hold only such mettings an ar« absolutely necessary and hire halls. They do not attempt to hold a meet ing every month or week. They just put all their Important subjects Into ax few meetings as possible and I think the club should do the same here. They r should hold meetings that are i really necessary for the welfare of the R'.gue River valley and hire a hail and if possible the meetings should be held at someone’» home. Only 25 members altogather and sometime» only 10 to 15 go to meetings. It would not be too much of a handicap to hold meetings at some one’s house. And the club should really forget all about the club room proposition and stick to the import ant work that is going to face us this year. And if it is absolutely necessary to hold meetigs In a bigger hall, hire one and pay cash so that there may be no thoughts of panhandling by some who seem to think thats what the club is for. ——U—- I ani not the only one who 1« opposed to that plan. There are half a dozen prominent members who oppose the plan. They said that they xeemed to be unable to -stop the plan because there are too many who fav< r it. it lx my firm belief that It a secret vote were made, the plan w uld be defeated badly. But It seems that every man has to put up their hand to favor the plan. They always do in all cases. But when you use the ballot system, you are bound to see a different result. —•— The club may be rich in having at least 100 dollars or more in their coffers. But the money 1» going to be gone mighty quick because of so members, there being 21 paid ones. I know of five members state«! that this year will be the year for them unless they make a better use of the club's money. —0— I am awful disappointed that the legislature only passed the law for bidding the fishing on the tributaries of Rogue River above Gold Hill. You see I have hoped that the legisltaure would include the Rogue River in •hat law. ..There's mighty little fish above Gold Ray dam and the river should be closed to give the steelhead a chance to come back by natural propagation And also somewhat dis- appolntd that the commission has not been given power to regulate the game season. Well, I Ifbpe better results next year. Howard District By Mr» Bit« H Leonard The A. E.
