In the outlying dis tric ts around Ashland, for inst anc e, the people a r e buying and reading the new spapers in o th e r centers in this section. They a re gre a tly in fluenced by the impression created by advertising. If they pick up ■» new spaper issue in which a d v e rtis ing is light, they read the conclusion th a t the m e rc h a n ts of th a t c om m uni ty are not ns a rule thoroughly wide awake. O regon has a law on m arriage. It is som ew hat of a one-sided law, in th a t it r e f e r s in p a rtic u la r to the prospective groom and has little or n o th in g to dem and of the prospect ive bride. Before securing a m a r riage license in Oregon the man must u n d e rg o an exacting medical e x a m in ation by an Oregon physician, pay ing the M. D.’s charge fo r same. Across th e Columbia river is V an couver, W ashington, fa re ten cents from P o rtla n d , and a p re tty hours ride. M any, it seems, have not been in accord with the Oregon law or dislike the exam ination part of the cerem ony. A r e c e n t news story from V an c ouver proves interesting reading, and d o e sn ’t speak encouragingly of the one-sided Oregon m arriage law. H ere is the Vancouver re p o rt: “ T h a t Portland was the source of more th a n 61 per cent of the m a r riage license business here in 1926 was shown by a check of m arriage license r e tu r n s on file in the a udi t o r ’s office. Out of 2400 licenses is sued, 1480 were issued to Po rtla n d couples, 493 to couples from oth e r places in Oregon, 491 from W ashing ton, 52 from California and 13 from Idaho. T w enty-four o th e r sta te s and A laska w ere represented. “ N inety-five V ancouver couples w ere licensed and 110 Clark county couples, outside of V ancouver ob ta in e d licenses. “ A to ta l of 1164 divorced persons, 668 women and 496 men, obtained licenses,an increase of 169 over last year. “ More than one-third of the couples, 866 p referred a justice of the peace or the superior judge to a m inister. A total of 1978 c e re monies w ere perform ed by the n e a r est m inisters pad officials. A few tra ve le d several blocks to find a m inister of their own faith. Only 18 Catcholic couples were m arried here during the year. T here were te n rem arriages. Ten couples ; of mixed races were m arried by a c ountry ju stic e of the peace, as V a n c o u v e r m inisters and officials re fu se to m a rry people of d if f e r e n t races. “ The to ta l nu m b e r of m inor brides ! was 114, ten being only 15 years old and 35 16 years old. T here were 30 m inor bridegrooms, 17 being 19 years old, eight 18 and five 17. Nine brides and 36 bridegroom s were more thnn 60 yenrs old.
