CENTRAL P blN T AMERICAN PAGE SIX — Fruit T r e e H e ar t Rot D is in fe cta n t Yields THURSDAY. AFR1L 29. 1926 > ■■ To Central Point Merchants to Try Heart rot o f fruit trees is prevent by tre sting wounds with a disin- fectant. The organisms causing Out New and Interesting ! ed heart rot are wound parasites be cause exposed wounds are necessary before inf ections can take place. Adverting Stunt. The «pores are spread in the late win ter and errly spring. When many pruning w ounds are left uncoated during the winter or spring rains the spores are sucked into the wood by the rain w iter. These infections are prevented by treating the wounds with an antiseptic coating. Successful results with Sherwin William fungi gordo in raw linseed oil have been obtained by S. M. Zel ler, plant pathologist of the Oregon experiment staion. This is a very fine powder in which the chemical union between the blue vitriol and the lime haae Iready taken place. This chemical union is absolutely necessary in order that the bark of the tree is not burnt by the free cop per sulfate. Preparations in which the chemical union has not taken place cause burning. For this reas on a two-powder bordeaux can not be used. Bordeaux paint is best prepared by taking enough dust for one day's operation and stirring slowly into this raw linseed oil until the paint is as thick as can be applied with a brush. Paste too thin will run o ff the wounds before it sets. Paint standing over any length o f time is worthless because it breaks down un less spread out in a thin coat. The standard spray remedy for the control of plant lice on ferns in Oregon is nicotine sulphate or black- leaf 40. Sometimes frequent syring ing o f the fern* with water under a little pressure, some 25 pounds, will free the plants o f the lice. Aer-o-plane Stores Organize I^ast Night Five buxine«« firms o f Central Point have put up over |10C.00 in premiums that will be given to ther customer« for aeroplane auction money. This aeroplane auction money will be given without cost for each 25c or more that is «pent with these firm«. On June 6th at 8 p. m., twenty- three premiums will be auctioned o ff to the highest bidder and the only money used will be aeroplane auction money which is given free with your purchases. Among the premiums are a Royal cord tire, a complete set of Community silver ware, a sack o f sugar, a fish rod, and various other useful and seas onable articles which are now on display in the window of Weaver’s store. This plan has been conducted in many towns throughout the west with great success and has been the means o f oroving to the home folks that it pays to give their business I to the home merchants. It will | cause lots o f excitement and inter- I est in Central Point. It is fun to | bid for the premiums and one of the best features of the plan is if you are not successful the first time you retain your action money to bid for a premium in one o f the succeeding auctions. The merchants contemplate conducting an aeroplane auction about every six weeks dur ing an entire year. Watch for de tails in a large display advertisement in this paper next week. Seed Ab un da n t The seed laboratory at the Oregon experiment station reports the fol lowing purity tests on alfalfa for a typical day. O f six samples tested only two were free from foreign seeds. Farmers buying certified Grimm are sure o f getting the right variety. On account of the large percentage o f farket seed that con tains dodder and other serious weed seeds it is important that the seed be tested for purity.
