"Three cheer» for our neighbors to the south In Del Norte County who turned out ea masse last week to protest President John«»'» proposed Congreirlonel Reso lutlon to close down the Mil Norte County. Cltlsens of Crescent City h eve worked together in re building a city torn by tidal ler-R elllm Redwood Com pany1» extensive lumbering and logging operation« sou theast of Crescent C ity. The cam paign against the resolution * a i triggered when the »hocked people of D el Norte County learned that President Jphnson, Secretary Udall and U. S. Senator Thomas Kuchel were sponsors of a Joint res olution to Stop the M lller- R elllm Redwood Company from Its logging operations until October 15, 1967, w hile Congress studle« whet her or not to adopt the Prest- 'dent's preferred plan to lo c ate a redwood national park in the county. This proposal would virtu ally ruin the econom y of the entire area. The backbone o f the area Is the M iller-Rel- 11m Company. According to an Independent econom ic consultant, D el Norte County Is 90K dependent upon the lumber Industry, Oh, but we must save the redwoods you say?W ell folks, what LBJ and his sob sister park supporters have NOT told you Is that some 113, 000 acres o f coast redwoods have already been set aside In the north coast California counti es end that approximately 16, 000 acres of such parks are already In D el Norte Cou nty. It makes no difference to them that 73 per cent of D el Norte’s lands are already owned by the state end feder al government and 14,000 acres of national forest in D el Norte County is In the red woods. Y es, the redwoods, as w e see them , would still stand . No "timber barons" are going to slash down all the redwoods. The redwoods which the M iller-ReD lm Company have been cutting have been on their own land. Yes, their jwn, privately owned land. And, LBJ has asked Congress to adopt a penal resolution ($ 5 0 ,0 0 0 per day fine, en d / or up to one year Imprison ment) sp ecifically against a private Individual for con tinuing work cm his own land.
