Depressed by the bumper blues, you might some day find yourself wishing for the good old days when cars were fewer and farther between. Don’ t do it. Like most good old days, the good old days of motoring just weren’t very good at alL Suppose you did find your self back In the noisy nine ties, clutching your money in your wet little palm, and eager to buy yourself one of those newfangled horseless c a re rlages. About all you could buy then would he a steam car riage, which amounted to an old buckboard with the shafts cut off, four rubbe retired wheels, and a strange propen sity for either soaking you with water vapor from time to time or blowing you higher than the proverbial kite. And the car you got would be L ille more than a stripped down chassis. If you wanted a top, windshield, side curtains, battery, or tires, you’ d have to go out and buy these on your own. Then you were ready to go, almost. If your trip was going to be more than 20 miles, you had to get out your tools, your kit of spare parts, and your maps, and lay your plans like •n attacking general. Then you put on your furelined over coat, hauled on your heavy woolen gloves, tight-fitting rubber-lined cap, and over- sized goggles.
