The Rogue V a lle y is a compact area and steadily increasing
population has for many years made apparent the need for an
adequate sanitary system. This is the kind of thing that w ill
4ot be brushed off by one or more citizens who may say "M y
■taation is satisfactory; it is no concern of m ine. " Every
rttisen in the Rogue V a lle y is affected right now, whether
hb is concerned or not. Concentration of people brings on a
problem of sanitation. An adequate disposal system is pro­
vided today, allowing for future growth, or tomorrow bring,
ufasanltary conditions that are unbearable.
• It is costly. Most good and necessary things are costly.
But neglect is much more costly. Planning has been done
in a very comprehensive way. Now it is up to the people as
a whole to bring about the construction and operation of a
mutually beneficial sanitary system in our valley. Some in­
dividuals w ill no doubt be inconvenienced more than others.
In these cases we can only trust to the good w ill and honest
efficiency of our officials for an administration of equity for
the common good. We believe they w ill do their best.

paper story, a radio comment, a T V news flash, and espe­
c ia lly Washington officials reporting "welcome indications"
that the Communist leadership i , mellowing.
We exchange
tourists with Russia. But insiders know that the Russian tour­
ists are carefully selected for American visits; each knows he
has a job to do and few there are who return to their
without vital technical information. Americans who go to
Russia find themselves closely restricted; hut they do leant
without fail how miserably backward and restrained is the
life of Russian people— the few whom they are allowed to
contact. From reliable sources we know that the Russian
masses are still in dire poverty as measured by our standards.
O fficial Washington begs and begs and begs for consulta­
tions and agreements with o fficial Communism, and periodi­
c a lly the Com m ie chiefs w ill "give indications" of assenting
to our proposals for mutual this or mutual that. And like the
cessation of bomb tests, we know that hty

no promise. They w ill agree to anything that w ill rob us or
put us on the defensive and dissipate our wealth of resources.
But you might note that the iron and bamboo curtains are
s till drawn; the Berlin w a ll stands; they fish where they want
to; they call us a ll kinds of names, while Offending phrases
on the pert of any of our officials are apologised for most ef-
fusiyely by our state department.
That is the reason we cannot believe our state department
h e a i and a ll other policy-m aking Washington officials are
simply naive. Our description of what their game is would
only be scoffed at, so we w ill forego the pleasure. We are
told that we are uninformed. Y et through the months and
yeaas enough reliable and responsible information has leaked
through to a ll of us common folks who care to be concerned,
to dlshearteningly assure us that the Communist objective ha,
not changed one iota. Only one thing about his objective
tim etable ha, changed: He is getting to much more to much
faster through cold war than he ever expected. He is utterly
aghgrt at the ease with which im perialirt America is giving
in to him .
We, too, are aghast at the abandon with which our elected
officials are yielding to Communist intrigue and dishonest de­
sign upon our cherished freedom. Our supreme court takes
a ll the retrain in g wraps off American communists and they
are elatedly preparing for a great political convention next
month, openly assuring us they had rather take us over po­
litic a lly than by force of arms. J. Edgar Hoover 1, still on
our side, but he is an old fuddyduddy and must expect the
curtain before long.
On his FORUM recently Dean Clarence Manion interviewed
Rev. Richard Wurmbrand, a Lutheran minister who spent 14
year, in a Rumanian Communist prison. A few week, ago he
appeared before the Internal Security Subcommittee of the
United State, Senate and told that body how unchanged today
are the horrible ta c tic , of the Communists. Dean Manion
asked him to te ll of his release after the long imprisonments
REVEREND WURMBRAND: I have been re ­
leased a year and a half ago. At that time a
delegation of our Rumanian Government came
t( the States to ask for loans, and in order to
win the sympathy of the public opinion they r e ­
leased nearly all the political prisoners of
Rumania. Those who have been in Rumanian
prisons for the sake of faith have always been
considered as political prisoners, so they
also fell under this amnesty.
Is a well-
known fact that Rumania sells its citizens, it
sells the Jew s—over 600,000 Jews have been
sold. TTie Communists mock the Nazis—they
say, "the Nazis were stupid, they killed the
we sell them ." Exactly as we read in the
Old’ Testament that the brothers of Joseph
wished to kill him but one of them said, why
shojild we kill him, we can win money by selling
him. And, that is their mentality, they sell
the Jews, they sell German national minorities

I was among those purchased. For me the
money has been paid by church authorities.
’Tie conditions of
imprisonment have been horrible with us in
Rumania. The Christians and the others were
tortured, beaten and starved. We had times
when we had one slice of bread a week. And
then, the mockery, things which are hardly
believable for W esterners, I know, but, we
must say the truth as it happened. I can say
before God that I say much less than the truth
because the whole truth you could not bear to
hear.
Christian prisoners have been tied to crosses
for four days and four nights. The crosses
were put on the floor twice a day and a hundred
other prisoners beaten and tortured and made
to fulfill their necessities upon the faces and
the bodies of the crucified ones. And then the
crosses were erected again with the Commu­
nists standing around jeering and mocking:
Look, your Christ, look, your Christ, how
beautiful He is, adore Him, worship Him, He
brings you fragrances from Heaven. "
Christian p riests were forced to use the dirt
of a hundred other prisoners, with excrem ents.
One was urine given into their hands and they
were obliged to say the Holy Mass over these
elements and they did it. They were half mad,
they didn't know any more what they did, they
had been tortured so. I asked one of them,
f ather, why have you not preferred to die than
to do this thing?" He answered, "Brother don't
judge me, I have suffered more than Christ "
I could say without end these atrocities and
cruelties committed against the Christians,
with the complicity of the West which speaks
about peaceful coexistence with such men who
commit such crim es.
DEAN MANION: I suppose many of these
m inisters of all religions died in the prison
under these punishments, didn't they?
R E V E R E N D W U R M B R A N D : Many died.
Nearly all Catholic oishops died. Monks, nuns
—my wife has been in prison with Catholic
nuns—she is a Protestant—but she told me that
these nuns were like angels. Imagine these
virgins, these Holy beings, in the hands of
these brutes. Horrible things have happened.
Many, many died in prison. But not only
clergymen, we had hundreds of peasants in
prison for their faith. The Greek Catholic
Church with us has been forbidden and peasants
who did not wish to leave this Greek Catholic
Church died in prison. Many of them.
DEAN MANION: Reverend Wurmbrand, you
mentioned "peaceful coexistence." What do you
think about the possibilities of peaceful coexist­
ence with any Communist government?
REVEREND WURMBRAND: I am not a man
of politics and from the political point of view I
can't express my opinion If It is right or not.
But, as a representative of the church—the
church can never have peaceful coexistence with
militant atheifim—with those who kill and to r­
ture Christians. Everyone would laugh If he
would say the church can peacefully coexist

with drug addiction or with drunkenness or with
prostitution or with gangsterism . We will
never make peace with sin .
Now, there are some clergymen who speak
about peace with those who kill the souls and
bodies of Christians. Our children, our youth,
are poisoned with atheism and not only with
atheism, because atheism means simply not to
believe in God, but they are taught to hate the
notion of God, to hate the notion of Christ and
all the Christian values. The church can never
have peaceful coexistence with Communism.
DEAN MANION: In the publicity about your
appearance before the Senate Internal Security
Subcommittee you told of the guards addressing
the prisoners about their foolish e x p e c ta tio n« of
the Americans coming to rescue them. How did
that go?
REVEREND WURMBRAND: The last time in
prison was the hardest one. It was a time of
brainwashing. We were no more beaten but
were submitted to the scientific suggestion to
leave our faith. Sitting in the prison of Sherla,
all the prisoners were gathered, and the com­
mandant of the prison, Major Alexandrescu,
delivered a speech. He was a very enthusi­
astic and convinced Communist. He told us:
You f ools , you sit in prison ten , fifteen,
twenty years expecting the Americans to
come to release you. You have loved
America, you have praised it, you have
appreciated it, now we give you the news
that the Americans come. But, they don't
come to release you—they come to help
us* to do business with us, to give us
loans.

"The A m ericans, if you love them , If you
praise them, if you suffer for them , will
never give you anything. But, if you mock
them, if you hate them , if you fight against
them, if you spit in their face, they im ­
mediately open their pockets and give you
money- You have been fools. we have
been the wise ones. "
DEAN MANION: In view of what you have
said, what do you think about Senator Fulbright's
approach to this question?
REVEREND WURMBRAND: I have read one
of his interviews in which he says that there
exists a bad Communism—Stalinist Communism
—and a good Communism, the Yugoslavian
Communism, for example. Now you have a
proverb in English: "The proof of the pudding
is in the eating. •' How does Mr. Fulbright know
if the pudding is good or not unless he tastes
it? I would propose him to taste the good Yugo­
slavian Communism, to go to Yugoslavia and to
criticize there in Yugoslavia, what Tito does.
If he will, he will see how good this Yugoslavian
Communism is.
