Gaorga TtUay of Gold H U I attended funeral services In Medford on January 18 far Howard Erwin Wharton. M r. Wharton was a brother- in -la w to Mrs. Duianbairy. Mr. Wharton waa bom March 16, 1890 In Cygnet, Ohio. HU father war a Me- thodlst minister. After finish- ing high school, Mr. Wharton attended the Rolla School o f Music In Rolla, Missouri. A t the age of 23 he moved to Portland. Later he moved to Gold H ill and war married to Ida Straun In 1916. Her parent« were one of the many pioneer fam ilies of Oregon. Mr. Wharton wa« editor and publisher o f the Gold H ill Newt from 1917 until 1926. This was the paper that wa« started by Ben Hur Lanpman. In the 1920'» he served a« Cold H ill C ity Recorder and also a« one of the volun teer firemen for Cold H UI. From 1934-1940 he owned the Green Lantern Cafe in Medford. He served as cook at Camp White during World War I I . Since 1946 he was active In restoring antique furniture. Mr. Wharton a member of the Itaak Walton League and t the Modem Woodsmen Lodge. Survivors include his wife, Ida; two sons, Ted Wharton o f Medford and Charles Whar ton of RAncho Santa Fe, C all- fcrnla; two sisters, Mrs. Flor ence Crimes of Portland and hft«» Marguerite Peters of PomdBa, California and five g ry S fh lld re n . Interment was in Gold H ill cem etety. The newly.com pleted Sana V a lle y Elementary school was in operation last week. The school was built at a coat of $269, 374. The buil ding consists of tlx classrooms, a multi-purpose room, Hitcher health room, office area, tea chers room and work area. One of the classrooms, at the present tim e , w ill be used as a library and music room. Crades 4 through 8 w ill be housed In the new building while grades one through three w ill remain at the old Sana V a lle y school, which »rill be called Sams V a lle y Primary school.
