The story of its founding can now be told. Two months ago, the Jim Ander- sons received word that a paper was to be started at Central Point and it happened that their publi cation at South Bend, Washington The South Bend Journal, had a offset newspaper press for sale. A trip was made here. Mr. C lif f Ayres was contacted at the First National Bank. He knew no thing of a paper starting but he thought the town should have its own weekly. The Andersons were impressed with the growth of Cen tral Point and its area. The last time Anderson had been in Cen tral Point was in 1955, when in the compnay of Ed Stolle of the Mt. Angel News, a purchase was made of some of the equipment of Central Point's last newspaper. The American. Mr. and Mrs. Gregory Slo“” directory ad specialists were working on a directory for South Rend Journal. When they were told of the Central Point s it uation their feeling was that Cen tral Point should have its paper and we were the logical people to do the job. They agreed to support the project if the Andersons would assume responsibility of the pub lication. The Sloans agreed to handle the advertising end. The first thought was to move the offset press from South Bend It was discovered that the Ashland Daily Tidings had a beautiful new offset newspaper plan. Mr. Edd Roundtree, publisher of the Tidings was contacted and pre vailed upon to do the printing of of the Central Point Times in his offset newspaper plant. The com position and assembling of the Times was to be done at Central Point. The South Bend Journal was the next problem. A capable pub lisher had to be found. Robert Messing, who had recently pub lished a paper in Tacoma, reluct antly agreed to take respon s ib ility so the South Bend hurtle was cleared. Actual publication of the Times may have dallied except that the best available location at 36 Pine owned by Llyod Livingston was not going to be available for long. Mr. Ayres called South Bend and said if the 36 Pine location waa wanted, the lease had better be completed. It was, and the pub lication was set to start with this issue. Readers w ill note the variety of type styles, especially in the reading matter. Uniformity w ill- come in following issues. The present staff is Mr., and Mrs. Anderson, Mr. and Mrs. Sloan have helped on the first issue, Rosemary Eiamann and Steve Grimm who helps after school. The Sloans have directory work to complete in Eugene and w ill not be active here until after the first of the year. YES HE'S COMING!
