The Primary Election
The primary election is past and is now history.
(There were several surprises sprung, among which
was the nomination of Geo. Joseph as the Republican
nominee. Joseph was looked upon by many as an also
ran but his fast furious campaign seemed to sweep the
people off their feet and especially in Multnomah county
where governors are made, in Oregon.
In the nomination of Joseph we find the people of
the state of Oregon giving the organization machines
the go-by.
There are several excuses given for the
nomination of Joseph, chiefly among these being that
the people are tiring of the hold the power companies
are getting on the state’s natural resources and that they
want municipal operation of the hydro - electric opera­
tions.
Another is that the period of unrest produces a
heavy vote for a radical candidate as a natural sequence.
Others claim that it a vote of sympathy, an outcome of
the recent disbarment trials.
There is talk of an independent candidate to run
against Joseph in the Fall elections and State Treasurer
Kay is again being groomed. The action of the people
in the primary is to be over-ruled by the organization
members who want a more stand pat sort of candidate.
At any rate we would suggest that the powers that
be in Oregon politics take cognizance of the hand writing
on the wall and govern themselves accordingly.
