A fter firing the two shots Reub rushed up the side o f the mountain and discovered by the blood in the tracks o f the animal that lie had shot him in the foot, he turned and yelled hack, " I ’ve got him” which hastened Bub on with his famous dogs. The reason Reub didn’ t make a fatal shot was because one of his olu sows who had heard her kindred's cal' and beat him to the blood curdling scene and was just finishing a two round bout with the villain when Reub tiled taking care to miss the sow. As soon as Bub arrived with his dogs thi dogs were shown the tracks and off at a rapid pace, immediately disappenng through the brush and snow which was f a l l i n g thicker and faster all the time. All those who had reached the deserted battle ground were trying to follow the tracks when all at once they heard the dogs open battle on the enemy over in Box canyon about a quarter of a mile from where they were and they all started to run in the direction of the sound but on account of Bub’s heighth of six feet two inches he could outrun the rest of them on the rough hillside and as soon as they realized this they encouraged him on with yells of “ Go it Bub” and as he went on leaping over some bushes and crashing through tan gled masses of others he could hear their voices becoming weaker all the time as he left them in the distance but still yelling ” Go it Bub.” In the meantime the dogs had made a hasty retreat foi Dobenger creek in Oak Cove where Luther Wortman was stationed at headquarters at that place and was in the ait of shaving when he heard the war as they passed there so he lu uldered lus rifle and rushed out bale beaded and coatless into the blindit g blizzard and tired twice but without favorable results.
